From Trans Brazilian Councilwoman Receiving Death Threats to Ghanaian Police Arresting Activists, This Week in Int’l LGBT News – SouthFloridaGayNews.com

This week read about Benny Briolly being forced to exile from Brazil due to death threats, and police arresting 21 people for “allegedly pushing an LGBT agenda” in Ghana.

Trans Brazilian Councilwoman Forced To Exile After Death Threats

On May 13, it was announced that Benny Briolly, the first transgender woman elected to the City Council of Nitero in Rio de Janeiro, had fled her homeland after receiving death threats.

According to the U.S. Network for Democracy in Brazil, Briolly, a Black supporter of Brazil’s PSOL (Socialism and Liberty Party), won the most votes among the women elected to the city council in the 2020 municipal elections.

Her election was seen by many as a clear challenge to the oppressive, misogynistic, and homophobic Brazilian state. The threats that she has received include everything from threats to bodily injury to death threats, and others have even included her home address.

The councilwoman confirmed that she has filed formal charges with national and international human rights groups, as well as reporting the attacks to law enforcement for investigation. Briolly will continue to serve as a councilwoman virtually.

Police In Ghana Arrest 21 LGBT Activists

Ghanaian police announced Friday that they had arrested 21 people for allegedly pushing an LGBT agenda at an illegal assembly in Ho, in the country’s southeast.

According to the police press release, the 16 women and five men were arrested May 20 at a hotel for nurses and midwives, where they allegedly met to promote LGBT events with books and leaflets titled “Coming Out” and “All about Trans.”

According to Reuters, all detainees will appear before a court June 4.

The group convened to exchange information about how to register and report human rights abuse faced by LGBT Ghanaians, according to Rightify Ghana.

“The press teamed up with the police to storm the meeting location, started taking images, took their belongings, and arrested them,” the rights group said in a post on Twitter.

Russia warns Disney against distributing film ‘Out’ featuring gay character – NBC News

MOSCOW — Walt Disney Co was warned by Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor against distributing content it said was harmful to the country’s children with its release of a short film, “Out,” which features a gay main character.

Roskomnadzor said it had sent a letter to Disney noting that it was against Russian law to distribute information which “denies family values and promotes non-traditional sexual relationships” to children.

“Out” was released on Disney+ in the United States last year.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Same-sex relationships are legal in Russia, but a 2013 law bans disseminating “propaganda on non-traditional sexual relations” among young Russians.

Human rights groups have condemned the legislation, saying it has helped increase social hostility towards homosexuality.

A Russian prosecutor on Monday called for Dolce & Gabbana Instagram advertisements showing same-sex couples kissing to be banned in the country.

Wis. governor orders LGBT flag to fly over Capitol; Ill., Minn. expected to do same – ChicagoPride.com

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers of Wisconsin has ordered the flying of the LGBT Pride flag over the state Capitol in Madison. The progressive first ordered the Pride flag raised over the historic seat of government in 2019 and again in 2020.

Last year, Evers said of his Pride executive orders, “Wisconsin is a proud state that recognizes that diversity makes our communities and our state stronger.”

The rainbow flag will fly over the Capitol square on June 1—the start of LGBT Pride month in the U.S. It will remain there until sunset on June 30.

A ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Capitol entrance near Main and King Streets.

Evers’ staff say the Pride flag will not affect the other flags flown over the Madison behemoth—the U.S. flag, the Wisconsin, flag, and the black and white POW-MIA flag.

Conservative Republicans once again said that the action is divisive and flies in the face of those who believe lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ‘lifestyles’ are a contradiction to their Christian beliefs.

Evers and Democrats however, say that the act sends a signal to all Wisconsinites that LGBT people are part of the state. As an historically oppressed group, it sends a message that they deserve civil rights—just like any other citizen of Wisconsin.

Evers’ act is especially prescient as the Republican-led legislature intends to pass laws that will deprive transgender youth from playing in public school athletics with cohorts of the same gender identity.

There is also movement toward legislation that will make it difficult for transgender youth to receive health care interventions that will help them fully experience their proper gender identity—even with doctor and family support for transition.

In Illinois, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker also ordered the Pride flag raised over the Capitol building in 2019. The flag was from Springfield-based The Phoenix Center, an LGBT organization serving central Illinois.

In Minnesota, Democratic Gov. Tim Walz flew the Pride flag in 2019 over the governor’s residence at Summit Avenue, St. Paul.

“While we still have work to do, I will always keep fighting to ensure all Minnesotans live free from discrimination,” Gov. Walz said at the time.

Georgia homeowner finds car vandalized with anti-gay slurs and his tires slashed – Metro Weekly

Picture of the vandalism – Photo: WGCL-TV.

A Georgia homeowner  found that his tires had been slashed and anti-gay slurs were keyed into his car.

Taner Bayram of Brookhaven, says he was home last Saturday night with a friend when “heard a hiss” and ran to the door, but was unable to catch the culprit in the act.

He found his tires had been slashed, the side of his car had been keyed, and someone had scratched: “He takes d**k” with a crude picture of male genitalia, and an unfinished message reading “he has A-.” His friend’s car was similarly vandalized.

Bayram, who immigrated 20 years ago from the Middle East, where he knew of LGBTQ people who were harmed for their sexuality, says he believes the incident constitutes a hate crime, not just a property crime.

“It’s a hate crime, it’s absolutely a hate crime,” he told Atlanta area CBS affiliate WGCL-TV. “Whoever it was was trying to [write] I have AIDS.”

He believes the culprit or culprits were able to get away before Bayram and his friend could reach the window to see what the noise was.

What’s even more mysterious is that Bayram only recently moved into his home three weeks ago, so he doesn’t believe he’s been around long enough to make enemies or develop suspicions about his neighbors.

A report from the Brookhaven Police Department classified the crime as having no bias motivation — which can be tough to prove — meaning it is not currently classified as a hate crime. But that could change if police obtain more evidence or identify the vandals.

Brookhaven Police are asking neighbors with any information or possible security video footage to come forward. Tips can be submitted by calling the department at 404-637-0477, or submitted anonymously through the Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta hotline at 404-577-TIPS(8477).

In the long scheme of things, Bayram says he’ll be able to move on with his life, but believes the vandals carry a lot of hatred in their hearts.

“This is a little scratch for me, it shook me a little bit, but at the end of the day it’s a financial hiccup. No biggie,” he said. “In a couple weeks it’s going to be fixed but that person should be fixed.

“Hate kills. I feel sorry for them,” he added. “I forgive them but I think they have a bigger issue than my forgiveness.”

LGBT Center of Greater Reading kicks off Pride Month with new, technological services for community – 69News WFMZ-TV

READING, Pa. | The LGBT Center of Greater Reading is kicking off Pride Month 2021 with a grand opening event for community residents.

The organization is rounding out its education programs with the opening of its new Community Training and Technology Center (TTC), an onsite resource available to provide education, developmental, and technological services to community members, they announced Friday.

They say the TTC builds on the LGBT Center’s existing services and status as southeast Pennsylvania’s leading training resource for LGBTQIA+ issues.

“We established the Training and Technology Center to respond to the need with the same top-tier, expert-level educational resources the Berks County community counts on us to provide, while also deepening our collaboration with partner organizations to reach broader audiences,” said Michelle Dech, Executive Director.

The addition of the TTC rounds out the LGBT Center’s educational platform, officials note, now including virtual, client-site, and onsite training at the Center.

The Center stated that the TTC grand opening sessions for Pride Month include LGBT 101 and an Introduction to the LGBT Center on Thursday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m., and Allyship on Sunday, June 27 at 4 p.m.

In further commemoration of Pride Month, the Center also announced a full slate of events that cover social gatherings, professional and family services, local businesses, health and well-being, and the arts.

“We’ve received a lot of feedback from the community that they want to celebrate Pride Month this year,” said Dech. “Our staff and board members felt we were in the perfect position to help people celebrate while safely bringing traffic back to our local businesses.”

Kicking off the 30-day line-up is the raising of the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag over Reading’s City Hall.

Highlights throughout the month include the first Rainbow Crawl of West Reading, featuring local shops, restaurants, and other vendors; a foster and adoption fair with local adoption agencies; a movie night; Pride “Play Days;” and drag events at the Reading Distilling Guild, the Center released.

The full list of events can be found on their website or on the Center’s Facebook page.

Throughout the month, the Center said it will commemorate the history of the LGBT community, significant events, and critical points of interest to today’s LGBTQIA+ community members and their allies through videos, photos, articles, and more.

Mom transforms high chair into ‘garden’ for a fun sensory activity for her baby – Yahoo! Voices

This TikTok parent’s high chair garden is the perfect rainy day activity for babies . TikTok user Kate Bast (@thebastfamily) shared how she made an indoor garden for her toddler to play with. In the video, Kate shows her daughter sitting in a high chair, placing flowers into a small pile of dirt that sits atop the high chair table. The crafty parent blends up some old cereal in a food processor, then uses the cereal powder as “dirt” for the high chair garden. The final touch is adding flowers or plants — Kate uses a mix of different colored flowers in her video. Parents who aren’t afraid of a little mess can also place the garden on a table, so the whole family can enjoy it!

NOT REAL NEWS: A look at what didn’t happen this week – The Edwardsville Intelligencer

A roundup of some of the most popular but completely untrue stories and visuals of the week. None of these are legit, even though they were shared widely on social media. The Associated Press checked them out. Here are the facts:

No evidence COVID-19 vaccines create new virus variants

CLAIM: The variants of the coronavirus that have been found in the global population were created by COVID-19 vaccines, because the vaccines caused people to develop antibodies and forced the virus to evolve.

THE FACTS: An article quoting a virologist known for spreading conspiracy theories about the coronavirus is pushing the false claim that COVID-19 vaccines were the catalyst that caused new variants of the virus to emerge around the globe. “Bombshell: Nobel Prize Winner Reveals – Covid Vaccine is ‘Creating Variants,’” reads the headline of the article, which has been shared thousands of times on Facebook. The article claims that the vaccines forced the virus to “‘find another solution’ or die,” thus producing the known coronavirus variants. The article attributes the claim to Luc Montagnier, who won the Nobel Prize in 2008 for discovering HIV and has spread false claims about the coronavirus. It is published on the website of the RAIR Foundation, which describes itself as a “grassroots activist organization” aiming to “combat the threats from Islamic supremacists, radical leftists and their allies.” Experts contacted by The Associated Press explained that coronavirus variants found across the globe began emerging long before vaccines were widely available. They said the evidence suggests new variants evolved as a result of prolonged viral infections in the population, not vaccines, which are designed to prevent such infections. “There’s no evidence that the vaccines create new variants, largely because vaccination appears to shut down viral infections, prevent people from spreading it to others,” said Dr. Stuart Ray, a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s medical school. “If the virus can’t spread, it doesn’t have the opportunity to evolve.” With some viruses, such as dengue virus, scientists have observed a phenomenon called antibody-dependent enhancement, in which antibodies generated by a past infection or a vaccine will bind to a viral pathogen but not neutralize it. This can cause people who have antibodies to experience more severe symptoms if they are infected later. However, this phenomenon has not been observed with the coronavirus or vaccines to prevent it. Montagnier did not respond to a request for comment.

COVID-19 vaccines do not wipe out antibodies

CLAIM: The Red Cross says if you recovered from COVID-19 and had a vaccine, you cannot donate blood plasma because the vaccine wipes out natural antibodies.

THE FACTS: The Red Cross says that statement is inaccurate and COVID-19 vaccines do not wipe out antibodies, according to experts. As of March 26, the Red Cross discontinued the dedicated collection of COVID-19 convalescent plasma due to declining demand from hospitals and a sufficient industry supply. Posts online are now misrepresenting the change and are spreading the false claim that the Red Cross is no longer taking any plasma donations from those who have had the COVID-19 virus and received a vaccine. Social media users are sharing a February clip from KMOV-4, a CBS-affiliate news station in Missouri, where the anchor incorrectly says the Red Cross is no longer accepting convalescent plasma from people who are vaccinated because COVID-19 vaccines wipe out natural antibodies. “If you have had covid and recovered you can donate plasma to help save lifes UNLESS YOU GET THE VACCINE after having recovered,” reads an inaccurate tweet that shared the video. Red Cross spokeswoman Katie Wilkes told The Associated Press that her organization had reached out to the news station to correct the information, since it is not correct that vaccines wipe out natural antibodies. Wilkes also said that even though the dedicated convalescent plasma program was discontinued, vaccinated people are still able to participate in blood drives. “In most cases, you can donate blood, platelets and plasma after a COVID-19 vaccine as long as you’re feeling healthy and well,” she said. KMOV-4 updated their story on May 27. “Today News4 updated a story we reported in February,” a station spokesperson told the AP in an email. “At that time, a representative of the American Red Cross said the organization’s policy was to discourage convalescent plasma donations from donors who previously had COVID-19 and were then vaccinated because of a then-belief about antibodies.” Experts say the recent posts about antibodies get it all wrong. Dr. C. Buddy Creech, a Vanderbilt University vaccine expert, said there is no reason to suspect that COVID-19 vaccines would diminish antibodies. In fact, vaccines should boost them. Vaccines produce a more consistent immune response to the coronavirus, since mild infections lead to lower antibody levels than more severe infections, Creech explained. “This is why those who have been infected still benefit from vaccination; that vaccine will then serve to boost the immune response that was made during the initial infection,” Creech said in an email.

Sweden is still using PCR tests for COVID-19 detection

CLAIM: Sweden has stopped using PCR tests to detect viruses.

THE FACTS: A post by Sweden’s top health agency discussing the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to detect the coronavirus is being misinterpreted by social media users who falsely say the test is being discontinued there. “Sweden Stops using PCR Tests – for the reason that good scientists have been saying for fifteen months – RNA from Viruses can be Detected for Months After Infection. Not fit for purpose,” a Twitter user falsely stated. The false claim also spread on Instagram. The PCR test, which can detect whether a virus’s genetic material is present in a sample, is considered to be the most accurate kind of COVID-19 test available. “We can confirm that Sweden has not suspended the use of PCR tests,” Anna Wetterqvist, a spokesperson for Sweden’s Public Health Agency, told the AP in an email. In July, the health agency published a notice describing clinical criteria that can be used to determine when COVID-19 patients should be considered free of infection, which was misinterpreted on social media. “The PCR technology used in tests to detect viruses cannot distinguish between viruses capable of infecting cells and viruses that have been neutralized by the immune system and therefore these tests cannot be used to determine whether someone is contagious or not,” reads a translation of the agency’s website. The health agency’s website notes, however, that PCR tests are used to identify whether someone is infected with COVID-19. Wetterqvist noted that about 350,000 PCR tests were carried out weekly in April and May. Sweden has carried out over 9.7 million PCR tests, she added. “The tests are considered secure given that testing is performed according to regulations for quality assessment as stated by the Health and Medical Services Act,” Wetterqvist said.

Video shows protesters at Toronto vaccine site

CLAIM: Video shows parents in Toronto being blocked by police as children were given the COVID-19 vaccine in exchange for ice cream, without parental permission.

THE FACTS: Posts online are falsely claiming that a video showing protesters outside a vaccine pop-up clinic at Toronto City Hall were in fact parents trying to stop health professionals and police from vaccinating their children. The city of Toronto and the University Health Network held a pop-up vaccination event on May 23 at City Hall, where 2,500 doses of vaccine were administered, along with free ice cream, to those 12 years of age and older, according to the University Health Network. Canada became the first country to approve the Pfizer vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds on May 5, a decision that was criticized by anti-vaccine advocates. In videos online, protesters can be seen at Nathan Phillips Square outside City Hall speaking out against vaccinating children at the clinic. “This is our children and we will not back down,” one woman could be heard yelling in the video at police. Posts online shared the video to falsely claim it showed children being vaccinated against their parents’ wishes. “A pop up vaccine clinic in Canada that is offering kids free ice cream in exchange for a vaccine, no parental permission required. Police are guarding the front to stop parents from intervening,” one tweet said. Another post claimed that the video showed parents being barred from a school campus where children were being vaccinated without parental consent. Gillian Howard, a spokesperson for the University Health Network, said clinic staff did not see children being vaccinated without a family member present. “Anyone receiving vaccination would have been taken through the consent process by clinical staff and if there was any indication that someone – whatever their age – didn’t understand the consent process, they would not be vaccinated,” she wrote in an email. Only a handful of demonstrators took part in the protest. Howard said that police were present due to threats to the clinic. Under Ontario’s Health Care Consent Act, there is no minimum age to provide consent for vaccination, according to Toronto Public Health spokesperson Dr. Vinita Dubey. Rather, it is up to the healthcare providers to ensure that they obtain informed consent prior to immunization. “This means the healthcare provider administering the vaccine has to deem the youth capable of understanding their decision,” Dubey said. “If the individual is incapable of consenting to receiving the vaccine, they would need consent from their substitute decision-maker, such as their parent or legal guardian.”

NY Post 1987 cover with Fauci is fake

CLAIM: The front page of a New York Post newspaper shows an image of Dr. Anthony Fauci under the headline, “THE MAN WHO GAVE US AIDS.”

THE FACTS: The supposed cover is fake. The image of the newspaper’s front page was manipulated to show a photo of Fauci under the headline, “Triggered ‘gay cancer’ epidemic in the U.S. THE MAN WHO GAVE US AIDS,” to give the false impression that a 1987 article was about him. The Post did run that headline on Oct. 6, 1987, but the actual story was about a different individual and did not mention Fauci — nor did it include his photo. Kenneth Moy, head librarian at the Post, shared with The Associated Press a scanned copy of the authentic front page and accompanying article that showed the real story focused on so-called “Patient Zero,” a gay man who was accused of bringing HIV to the United States. Scientists now say that assumption was wrong, and that HIV appeared in the U.S. at an earlier date. During the AIDS epidemic, Fauci was appointed director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. At the height of the crisis, Fauci and other government officials were criticized by AIDS activists for how they handled developing and administering treatments for the disease.

Chelsea Clinton didn’t tweet about Bill Gates’ ‘behavior’

CLAIM: Chelsea Clinton tweeted about Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, asking, “What kind of man pursues a physical relationship with an underling and has relations with her in their office?”

THE FACTS: On May 24, just over a week after news broke that Microsoft Corp. had investigated Gates over a romantic relationship with a female Microsoft employee, social media users were sharing a fake tweet about the situation designed to look like it came from former President Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea Clinton. “The more I hear about Bill Gates behavior the more ashamed for him I feel,” the fake tweet read. “What kind of man pursues a physical relationship with an underling and has relations with her in their office??? Time to close the window on him. I always liked Mac better anyway.” Facebook and Twitter users shared the bogus tweet as real, suggesting the younger Clinton’s words were ironic in light of the extramarital affair her father had with a White House intern while in office. But there is no evidence Chelsea Clinton ever tweeted this. A search of her Twitter feed shows she did not post any tweets on the date shown on the fake tweet, May 17. Clinton’s feed before and after that date also shows no evidence of any tweet resembling the image. An internet search finds no credible reports on the tweet, which likely would have garnered media attention had it been real. Chelsea Clinton’s spokesperson Sarah Horowitz confirmed to The Associated Press that the tweet is fake.

Video of Ted Cruz supposedly swallowing a fly was edited

CLAIM: Video shows Texas Sen. Ted Cruz swallowing a fly during a Fox News interview.

THE FACTS: The video circulating on social media was manipulated and was first shared on Reddit last year as a joke with the title “Ted Cruz Eats Spider.” On June 27, 2019, Cruz, the Republican senator, appeared on the Fox News show “Hannity,” but there was no crawling critter in the original clip. In the original video, Cruz’s voice cracks and Hannity tells him, “Take a sip of water. By the way, that’s your Marco Rubio moment, just in case you didn’t know.” A clip of Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida sipping from a water bottle during a speech was widely shared in 2013. In the edited video of Cruz, which has no audio, some kind of crawling pest has been added. Social media users compared the edited video to the time a fly landed on Vice President Mike Pence’s head during a debate with then-vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris last October. “Remember that fly on Pence’s head? Well Ted Cruz ate it last night,” wrote an Instagram user who shared the manipulated video. Twitter users shared the manipulated video with the hashtag #ToadCruz.

Is Betty DeVille gay in Rugrats reboot?

The Rugrats reboot is officially confirming what viewers in the 90s and early 2000s already assumed.

Betty DeVille, Phil and Lil’s mom, is openly gay in the new reiteration of the popular cartoon.

The new show even went so far as to cast queer actress, Natalie Morales to voice Betty.

Morales commented, “Anyone who watched the original show may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia.”

“Betty is a single mom with her own business who has twins and still has time to hang out with her friends and her community.”

She is excited about the queer representation, “I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that.”

“And yeah, Betty is a fictional cartoon, but even cartoons were hugely influential for me as a kid and if I’d been watching ‘Rugrats’and seen Betty casually talking about her ex-girlfriend, I think at least a part of me would have felt like things might be okay in the future.”

How has social media reacted to the news?

Millennials who grew up watching the original show were shocked.

But not that Betty is now openly gay, they were stunned that she wasn’t before.

When does the Rugrats reboot premiere?

The reboot premieres on Thursday, May 28 with the first batch of episodes followed by a second batch at a later date.

It will be streaming on Paramount+.

According to the log line the show will follow, “even bigger adventures born from the color imaginations of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelica.”

The one-hour premiere, “Second Time Around,” Tommy leads the babies on an adventure to help Chuckie after his big attempt to be brave goes wrong.

Aunt says nephew was attacked at school because he’s gay – KTVU San Francisco

Chad Sanford is out of the hospital, but his aunt Raquel Showers said the teenager is still dealing with headaches after being attacked at Deerfield Beach Middle School on May 21.

Showers posted a video of the attack to her Facebook page saying that Chad was attacked because he’s gay.

She said a group of eighth-graders followed Chad into the sixth-grade hallway. One of them picked Chad up by the legs and slammed him face-first to the floor.

The video shows a crowd of teenagers shouting while Chad was being spat on and kicked by the boys. One of the kicks landed on Chad’s face, Showers said. By the time he got to the emergency room, Chad had a knot on his head from all the violence.

Showers told FOX Television Stations one of her nephew’s attackers warned Chad the day before not to show up to school on that day — threatening to “beat your gay a**.”

She said Chad told the principal and a teacher about the threat, but she said they did nothing to stop it. In addition, she accused the school security guard of turning his back “like he didn’t see what was going on.”

Broward County Public Schools issued the following statement on the incident:

“Student safety is our highest priority. The school’s leadership is taking this incident seriously and is working with law enforcement in its investigation. Any students involved will also face appropriate school disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Code Book for Student Conduct. Due to the ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide additional details and defer to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.”

Showers said they’ve pressed charges but nothing has happened yet. She said one of the boys struck again two days after Chad’s attack, targeting another gay boy after school and stealing his Airpods.

Kellogg’s introduces LGBT-themed cereal encouraging kids to chose their pronouns – The Christian Post

Kellogg's Together With Pride cereal
Kellogg’s launched the “Together With Pride” cereal ahead of Pride Month 2021. The company will donate for every purchase to the LGBT advocacy group GLAAD. |

A prominent American cereal company has partnered with an LGBT advocacy group to create a special cereal packaged in a box encouraging people to choose their own pronouns.

Kellogg’s, the parent company of popular cereal brands including Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies and Special K, unveiled its “Together with Pride” campaign in partnership with the GLAAD last week.

The campaign, which has adopted the slogan “Boxes are for cereal, not people,” will last from May 1 to Nov. 30, 2021. It rests on the premise that “No matter who you are, who you love or what pronouns you use, you’re too awesome to fit into a box.”

The Michigan-based company noted on its Instagram page that for every box of “Together with Price” cereal sold, it will donate $3 to GLAAD.  Originally founded as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, GLAAD promotes LGBT acceptance in the media.

The front of the cereal box includes the logo for Kellogg’s emblazoned in rainbow colors and the GLAAD logo.

Cartoon characters associated with the company’s brands surround a bowl of rainbow-colored cereal. As a description of the limited-edition cereal on the GLAAD website explains, “the new cereal features berry-flavored rainbow hearts dusted with edible glitter.”

“On each box, supporters can learn about Kellogg’s long standing partnership with GLAAD and secure a tear-out ‘Together Band’ to proudly share and wear their pronouns,” wrote GLAAD’s Events Manager Mark Olson. Pronoun options included on the side of the cereal boxes include the traditional “he/him” and “she/her” in addition to “they/them.”

Pictures shared on social media show that the side of the box also enables people to “add your own” pronouns. The top of the box also has space for people to write their preferred pronouns.

In a statement, GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis praised the pronouns as one of several “initiatives that spotlight the importance of using correct pronouns to create safe and welcoming spaces for trans and nonbinary people.”

Doug VanDeGelde, the general manager of Kellogg’s U.S cereal category, described the new cereal as “the latest chapter in a years long partnership with GLAAD” and “the evolution of the much-loved All Together cereal, which previously was only available online.”

The Together With Pride cereal is not the first time the company has embraced pro-LGBT activism. In 2014, Kellogg’s came under fire for sponsoring a pride parade in Atlanta and including mascot Tony the Tiger in an advertisement in the event’s “pride guide.”

In the ad, Tony the Tiger was pictured next to a message stating, “Wear Your Stripes with Pride.” In the ad, the tiger declared, “At Kellogg’s, we’re an evolving culture that respects and accepts employees’ sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression so that all employees can be authentic and fully engaged.”

The bottom of the ad featured Kellogg’s logo as well as an indication that Kellogg’s was listed by the LGBT activist organization Human Rights Campaign as one of “the best places to work for LGBT equality.”

Kellogg’s new cereal received backlash from conservative Christian groups.

The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Prosperity launched a petition calling on Kellogg’s “stop promoting pro-homosexual ‘pride’ cereal.”

Addressed to Kellogg’s CEO Steve Cahillane, the petition calls on the company to “promote purity and virtue, not lust and vice” and demands that Kellogg’s stop selling the cereal. The petition has accumulated more than 21,000 supporters as of Friday afternoon.

The introduction of the Together With Pride cereal comes as the annual Pride Month recognizing the LGBT movement will kick off next week. Many other companies have already begun promoting rainbow-colored products in recognition of the occasion.

Disney has introduced the “Rainbow Disney Collection,” featuring clothing with rainbow-colored pictures of beloved Disney characters. Additionally, the entertainment company has worked with its partners to create rainbow-colored toys depicting Disney characters.

Last October, Nabisco gave away limited-edition Oreo cookies filled with different colors of the rainbow to celebrate LGBT History Month.

Gay rights pioneer and photojournalist Kay Tobin Lahusen dies at 91 – NBC News

Kay Tobin Lahusen, a pioneering gay rights activist who chronicled the movement’s earliest days through her photography and writing, has died. She was 91.

Known as the first openly gay U.S. photojournalist, Lahusen died Wednesday at Chester County Hospital outside Philadelphia, following a brief illness.

Together with her partner, the late activist Barbara Gittings, Lahusen advocated for gay civil rights years before the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York helped launch the modern LGBTQ era. She captured widely published images of some of the nation’s first protests.

Lahusen “was the first photojournalist in our community,” said Mark Segal, a friend of more than 50 years and founder and publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News. “Practically every photo we have of that time is from Kay.”

Lahusen photographed a series of gay rights demonstrations held in front of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall each July 4 from 1965 to 1969 — and was a marcher herself, carrying signs that said “First Class Citizenship for Homosexuals” and “End Official Persecution of Homosexuals.” She documented gay rights protests at the White House and the Pentagon.

“Whatever the Founding Fathers envisioned as the rights and privileges of our citizens, we wanted for ourselves as well,” she told WHYY for a 2015 commemoration. “Somebody had to get out and show their face in public and proclaim things and be aggressive.”

Lahusen’s life partner, Gittings, was one of the nation’s most prominent lesbian activists and co-organizer of the “Annual Reminder” pickets in Philadelphia.

They had met in 1961 at a picnic held by Daughters of Bilitis, the first known lesbian organization in the U.S. whose East Coast chapter Gittings had founded. Lahusen was arts editor and shot groundbreaking cover photos of gay women for the group’s national publication, The Ladder, which Gittings edited.

Lahusen also was a founding member of the Gay Activists Alliance and photographed that group’s protests, called “zaps.” She was there for Philadelphia’s first gay pride march in 1972. Under the pseudonym Kay Tobin, she co-authored a 1972 book, “The Gay Crusaders,” which profiled the movement’s early leaders.

Lahusen and Gittings also took part in the campaign that led to the American Psychiatric Association’s 1973 decision to drop homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

Lahusen and Gittings were a couple for 46 years. After Gittings’ 2007 death, Lahusen spent her later years in a retirement home in Kennett Square, where she gave interviews, helped maintain Gittings’ legacy and kept alive the history of the early gay civil rights movement.

“Stonewall was not the first thing, that’s what she would tell you,” said her friend, Judith Armstrong. “The history is there and the history she definitely wanted to be preserved. … She wanted the story to be out there.”

The New York Public Library houses an extensive collection of Gittings and Lahusen’s papers and photographs.

Russia warns Disney against distributing short film featuring gay character – Reuters

Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor on Friday warned Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) against distributing content it said was harmful to children in Russia with its release of a short film, “Out”, which features a gay main character.

A Russian prosecutor on Monday called for Dolce & Gabbana Instagram advertisements showing same-sex couples kissing to be banned in the country. read more
