Joel Kim Booster Calls Bowen Yang Friendship “Life Changing” – Instinct Magazine

Having a gay, Asian friend has been a “life changing” experience for Joel Kim Booster.

SNL member Bowen Yang recently appeared on comedian Joel Kim Booster’s SiriusXM series Joy F*ck Club. While the two talked, Joel Kim Booster opened up about how Yang was his “first other gay, Asian friend” and how the friendship “affected the trajectory of my own life in the ways I saw myself.”

“It broke me out of a certain mindset about being the only one in existence,” Booster explained, according to People. “There’s a sort of thing that happens, especially when you’re a double minority, that makes you feel [alone] especially when you’re socialised to believe you’re the only one.”

“I feel the same,” Yang replied. “With you, it was very, very natural.”

The two met through a mutual friend. The friend, who was notably white, brought them both into the same Facebook group message. Seeing as they both are gay, Asian and comedians, the friend thought they would make a good fit. Booster and Yang, however, were hesitant and waited a full year before meeting.

“[The friend] literally said the words, ‘You’re both gay and Asian, and do comedy. You should be friends,’” Booster recalls. “I believe we put off meeting [for] a full calendar year, if not longer. Because we were so stubborn — I was immediately suspicious.”

But when they did meet, Booster recalled thinking, “oh this is so much better than trying to forge a path as the only one.”

As PinkNews reports, the conversation then transitioned into talking about the intersection of being queer and Asian. Specifically, the two talked about how it shaped their lives, careers, and personalities. They both agreed that, at times, the two parts of their lives feel at odds with each other.

“It might be fair to say that at first consideration, it feels like they’re identities that are somewhat at odds with each other. In terms of Western gay identities, which in a lot of ways sort of devalues Asian people or sort of puts Asian people in this weird purgatorial status in the gay community,” Yang explained. “That feels like it’s at odds with my Asian identity, which in a lot of weird, bizarre ways is also messaged something around like ‘You don’t be gay, don’t be gay’.”

He added: “So having those two things be weird, diametrically opposed poles in some ways, having those two things have to be tightly wound together is really, really, really tough.”

Yang, however, notes that, “holding those two identities of being gay and Asian have, I guess, made my skin a little thicker.”

“You and I have been through traumatic things, and I feel like we have relatively good heads on our shoulders,” he told Booster. “I feel like that is a virtue of us having to build so many coping mechanisms out of thin air, and pull them out of nowhere, and just be like, ‘Well, I have to survive this and so this is how I’m going to deal with it.’ I don’t know, I feel like it’s made me cope better. But I do kind of spiral every now and then. That’s the reality.”

Both comedians have done well in the entertainment industry since meeting. Bowen Yang is the co-host of the Las Culturistas podcast and is the first Chinese-American star on Saturday Night Live. He also became the second openly gay man to appear on the show and the first openly gay man to be featured longer than one season. Yang also just appeared in Awkwafina’s HBO Max show Nora from Queens.

Meanwhile, Joel Kim Booster hosts the Joy F*ck Club and the Urgent Care podcast. Booster also has appeared on several late night shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers or Late Night with Conana O’Brien. Booster co-starred on the short-lived NBC comedy series Sunnyside.

Northeastern students urge Class of 2021 to ‘make a new normal that we can all be proud of’ – News@Northeastern

“I was told that America is the land of dreams,” said Neha Jain on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park. She went on to tell a story of resilience and growth that resonated with her fellow graduates at Northeastern’s undergraduate Commencement ceremony.

Jain told her classmates that she had traveled to Northeastern from a small town near Delhi because the United States was, she said, “the land of infinite opportunities and a place where I can be whoever I want to be.”

“The first few days of freshmen year were full of self-doubt and anxiety, where I constantly questioned myself if I will ever make it, where the thought of being on co-op gave me chills as I did not even have a resume or any experience in terms of working,” said Jain, who earned her degree in business administration in December 2020. “I didn’t know how will I ever fit in with people from cultures I have never even heard of—and how will I ever survive the crazy snow days that everyone kept warning me of.

Graduates

“But here I am,” said Jain, who completed two “amazing” co-ops, studied abroad in Copenhagen, worked multiple different on-campus jobs and mentored multiple students at Northeastern.

Since January, Jain has been working in Dubai as a client services associate for AlphaSights, an information services company. She had made the long journey back to Boston to participate in this Commencement ceremony, which could not be taken for granted, not after the isolating year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I knew so little of the world when I initially joined Northeastern,” Jain said. “I learned how to love, how to feel joy, how to set goals, and how to foster a sense of community, all here at Northeastern.

“I will truly miss and cherish my time here, whether it was the strolls at the Fence, or the 2 a.m. burritos from Amelias, the unending group meetings at Curry to the free Ben & Jerry’s ice creams in summer,” Jain said. “The painful walk to the classroom in snowstorms, to the concerts at afterHOURS. The Bello Bello sandwich from Rebecca’s to the midnight breakfast at Steast [Stetson East].

The theme of transformation also ran through the speech by Nathan Hostert at the undergraduate ceremony on Saturday morning. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, noted Hostert, his generation had already grown accustomed to change.

“We have revolted against so many of the ideas that we grew up with, becoming more comfortable talking about things like mental health, sexuality, and privilege,” said Hostert, who came to Northeastern from Wichita, Kan., and was graduating with a bachelor’s in political science. “We have already accepted that we’ll have to spend our whole lives fighting a different once-in-a-lifetime public health crisis: climate change.”

Hostert asked his fellow graduates to think back to who they were when they first arrived at Northeastern.

“For me, that person was an insecure gay kid who stayed in the closet all throughout high school in a socially conservative community in Kansas, and who didn’t know if he would ever find meaning in life,” Hostert said. “And now think about everything you’ve accomplished at Northeastern, and how that’s shaped who you are today. For me, that person is a less insecure gay kid, who’s co-oped at the city, state, and federal levels of government, and who loves biking to parks and dancing with friends.”

He spoke of the trauma caused by the pandemic, and all the ways that he and his classmates have been forced to learn and grow in order to deal with the societal issues that their generation have inherited.

“What an opportunity we have then to go out and fix those problems that are so deeply ingrained in our policies, in our communities, our industries and also in ourselves,” Hostert said. “Whether you are a computer scientist or a life scientist, an artist or an engineer, a social worker or a small-business owner, this is our chance. We have got to go fix this. And quite honestly I can’t think of a better group of people to do it.

“So let’s take all of our Northeastern experiences, along with the network of peers and mentors and friends that we have made here, and let’s go make the world a better place,” concluded Hostert. “Let’s make a new normal that we can all be proud of.”

Iran’s anti-LGBT military law blamed for murder of gay man – The Jerusalem Post

Three men murdered 20-year-old Alireza “Ali” Fazeli-Monfared on Tuesday in the Iranian city of Ahvaz allegedly because they learned the Iranian military exempted him due to “moral and sexual depravities such as transsexualism.”Iranian news organizations outside of the Islamic Republic reported on Friday and Saturday about the anti-gay and anti-transgender murder of Fazeli-Monfared after at least two members of his family became aware of a letter from the Iranian regime’s conscription military organization declaring him ineligible because of his sexual orientation.According to a report on the website of IranWire, “At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Alireza had a phone conversation with his mother for the last time,” Aghil Abyat, Alireza’s closest friend, told IranWire. “Then his half-brother came to him and on the pretext that their father wanted to see him, got him into the car and drove him outside the city.”The three males took Fazeli-Monfared, who is a member of the Iranian Arab minority in the Khuzestan province, and went to the village of Borumi near the capital of Ahvaz and murdered him during the night. The London-based Iran International news website wrote that “LGTB (lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual) activists have blamed Iran’s compulsory military service laws and regulations for the alleged ‘honor-killing’ of the gay, transgender man in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz on May 4.”The activist group 6Rang (six colors), which campaigns for Iranian lesbians and transsexuals, wrote in a series of social media posts on Friday that the three men lured Fazeli-Monfared “to a deserted place” and killed him.Iran International, the London-based Persian language TV station, reported that Aghil Bayat, an Iranian LGBT rights activist and Fazeli-Monfared’s partner, said that Fazeli-Monfared’s half-brother and two others killed Fazeli-Monfared.

“Fazeli-Monfared’s partner told 6Rang that the alleged killers had called Fazeli-Monfared’s mother and told her where to find her only son’s beheaded body. According to Bayat, Fazeli-Monfared’s mother was “hospitalized with shock,” reported Iran International.Amsterdam-based Persian language Radio Zamaneh reported the Iranian authorities arrested the three men.Iran’s regime has codified the death penalty in its Sharia law system for same-sex relations. The Islamic Republic of Iran has executed 4,000-6,000 gays and lesbians since the nation’s 1979 revolution, according to a 2008 British WikiLeaks diplomatic cable.“Alireza’s killing as a result of his sexual orientation being stated on his military service [exemption] card has once again provided proof for our warning several years ago about the risks caused by the military service exemption process for gay Iranian men and underlines the need for legislation to prevent these safety risks,” 6Rang wrote on Friday. The organization 6Rang also wrote that it had warned that Iran’s anti-gay military law permits government and private institutions “to identify gay men with only one glance at the military service exemption card,” and allow targeting of the men for bias.BBC Persian reported that it secured audiotapes that Fazeli-Monfared said he was in grave danger and was about to depart for Turkey and then to Europe.According to 6Rang, Fazeli-Monfared’s partner, Bayat, said that Fazeli-Monfared planned to flee to Turkey and secure asylum in Europe.

NBA DFS Breakdown (Saturday, May 8): Keep Riding the Shorthanded Rockets – Fantasy Labs

Saturday features a seven-game slate starting at 7 p.m. ET.

Point Guard

Stud

It’s honestly getting boring to write about Russell Westbrook every single time he’s on the slate, but he’s must-play at the moment. He’s posted a dominant average Plus/Minus of +10.64 over his past 10 games, and he’s increased his production to 1.69 DraftKings points per minute over the past month.

He’s also carrying one of the largest workloads in the league, and no one on today’s slate is projected for more minutes in our NBA Models. That’s a great combination, particularly in an elite matchup vs. the Pacers. They have really struggled defensively of late, and the Wizards’ massive implied team total of 126.25 is the to mark on the slate.

Value

The Raptors are in full tank mode at the moment, and they will be without Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby on today’s slate. That means Malachi Flynn should handle the point guard minutes, and he has thrived in that role this season. He’s played seven games this season with both Lowry and VanVleet out of the lineup, and he’s averaged 35.18 DraftKings points in those contests. That makes him an elite target, particularly on DraftKings given his Bargain Rating of 92%.

Fast Break

Steph Curry has been on a major heater recently. He’s increased his production to 1.47 FanDuel points per minute over the past month, and he’s posted an astronomical 41.2% usage rate over his past five games in particular. He should continue to carry a massive workload as long as Kelly Oubre is sidelined, which makes him very appealing at $10,200 on FanDuel.

On the other side of that matchup, the Thunder have already ruled out Aleksej Pokusevski vs. the Warriors, and Lu Dort is also listed as questionable. The Thunder have basically phoned it in at this point, so don’t be surprised if Dort gets the night off. If that happens, Theo Maledon would be asked to take over as one of their primary offensive options. He’s coming off 36.8 FanDuel points in his last contest, and $4,900 salary on FanDuel comes with a Bargain Rating of 75%.

Shooting Guard

Stud

Westbrook’s emergence has had a negative impact on Bradley Beal from a fantasy perspective, but he’s still averaged 1.15 FanDuel points per minute over the past month. He’s also been priced down to just $9,000 on FanDuel, resulting in a Bargain Rating of 82%, and Beal has historically averaged a Plus/Minus of +2.57 with a comparable salary (per the Trends tool). That makes him a nice buy-low target in an excellent spot vs. the Pacers.

Value

Grayson Allen has been ruled out for the second-straight game, and Desmond Bane replaced him in the starting lineup in their last contest. Bane wasn’t able to return value in that matchup, but it still bodes well for his fantasy prospects moving forward. He’s averaged 0.83 DraftKings points per minute over the past month, so he can take advantage of some additional playing time. He’s an excellent option at $4,100 on DraftKings given his Bargain Rating of 95%.

Fast Break

Sticking with the Grizzlies, De’Anthony Melton is their preferred value target on FanDuel. He’s not expected to see as much playing time as Bane, but he’s been more effective on a per-minute basis this season. He’s also dirt-cheap at just $3,600 on FanDuel.

The Jazz continue to play without both Mike Conley and Donovan Mitchell, so Jordan Clarkson should continue to carry a larger usage rate than usual. He’s posted a positive Plus/Minus in three straight games, and he’s exploded for at least 42.2 FanDuel points in each of his past two. He has solid upside against a Rockets’ team that is largely devoid of NBA talent at the moment.

Small Forward

Stud

Small forward is a bit thin at the top on Saturday, but Michael Porter Jr. stands out as an excellent option at $7,000 on FanDuel. He’s operated as the Nuggets’ No. 2 option recently given all their injuries, and he’s increased his production to 1.07 FanDuel points per minute over the past month. Overall, he’s posted an average Plus/Minus of +5.00 over his past 10 games. He has nice upside Saturday vs. the Nets, who rank just 21st in defensive efficiency this season.

Value

Anthony Lamb was a preferred value option at the position on yesterday’s slate, and he did not disappoint with 27.0 DraftKings points. He also logged nearly 34.9 minutes in that contest, and he’s scored at least 24.25 DraftKings points in all three games where he’s played at least 30 minutes this season. He should be looking at another large workload for the tanking Rockets on Saturday, so fire up Lamb with confidence.

Fast Break

Rudy Gay has found the perfect role for himself late in his career: He comes off the bench and gets buckets. He’s posted a positive Plus/Minus in four of his past five games on DraftKings, and he’s scored at least 27.75 DraftKings points in three of them. He has another exploitable matchup Saturday vs. the Blazers – they rank just 29th in defensive efficiency – and Gay’s $4,000 salary on DraftKings comes with a Bargain Rating of 99%.

Stanley Johnson is another potential source of value at the small forward position. He’s currently projected for 32.5 minutes in our NBA Models at just $3,700 on DraftKings, and players with comparable salaries and minute projections have historically averaged a Plus/Minus of +3.97.

Power Forward

Stud

Pascal Siakam has scored at least 66.7 FanDuel points in two of his past three games, and he has the potential for another monster performance on Saturday. He’s averaged 38.5 minutes in five games without Lowry and VanVleet this season, and he’s increased his production to 1.20 FanDuel points per minute with both players off the court. That makes him too cheap at just $8,900.

Value

Brandon Clarke was forced out of the Grizzlies’ rotation for a two-game stretch, but he’s been an excellent source of fantasy value when on the court. He’s posted a positive Plus/Minus on DraftKings in each of the past six games that he’s actually appeared in, and he’s scored at least 23.5 DraftKings points in his past two contests. He’s averaged 0.98 DraftKings points per minute this season, so it’s not surprising that he’s found success when he’s been on the court. Clarke is one of the best pure values of the day on DraftKings, where his $3,700 salary comes with a Bargain Rating of 97%.

Fast Break

Kenyon Martin Jr. is another elite option on DraftKings, and his 99% Bargain Rating makes him an even better value than Clarke. He’s carried a huge workload for the shorthanded Rockets recently, and he’s responded with at least 47.25 DraftKings points in back-to-back games. Christian Wood has already been ruled out for tonight’s contest, and there will undoubtedly be more absences announced for the Rockets closer to game-time. As long as Martin is expected to play big minutes, he’s worthy of consideration.

Jerami Grant is targeting tonight for his return to the lineup, and who knows how many minutes he’ll actually play. The Pistons have been focusing on getting more minutes for their younger players, so Grant could play less than expected even if he’s active. Still, he’s impossible to ignore at just $6,100 on FanDuel. He’s averaged over 35 FanDuel points per game this season, so he should still be able to return value even with less playing time than usual.

Center

Stud

Nikola Jokic continues to provide excellent value for the shorthanded Nuggets. The only thing that has been able to stop him recently has been reduced minutes in blowouts, and tonight’s matchup vs. the Nets figures to be competitive. It’s also a great matchup for Jokic since the Nets don’t have many competent big men. He owns an Opponent Plus/Minus of +2.44 on FanDuel, and he leads all centers with 13 Pro Trends.

Value

Khem Birch should see plenty of minutes for the shorthanded Raptors on Saturday, which makes him a very appealing option across the industry. He’s currently projected for 35.0 minutes in our NBA Models, and he’s increased his production to 0.99 FanDuel points per minute over the past month. He’s coming off 43.3 FanDuel points vs. the Wizards, and he could be looking at similar production vs. the Grizzlies.

Fast Break

Kelly Olynyk is basically the last man standing for the Rockets. He did everything he could to keep them in the game yesterday vs. the Bucks, finishing with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. Ultimately, he finished with at least 52.9 FanDuel points for the second-straight game. He should be looking at another substantial role Saturday vs. the Jazz, and while it’s a tough matchup, Olynyk still stands out as one of the strongest options at the position.

Paul Millsap has posted a positive Plus/Minus in each of his past 10 games on DraftKings, and he’s averaged a Plus/Minus of +7.39 over that time frame. He’s increased his production to 1.14 DraftKings points per minute over the past month, yet he remains extremely affordable at $3,800 on DraftKings. His modest playing time keeps his ceiling on the lower side, but he’s a good bet to return value.

Ohio becomes latest state to propose transgender sports ban – Times Tribune of Corbin

The proposals, titled the Save Women’s Sports Act, would require schools and higher education institutions in the state to designate “separate single-sex teams and sports for each sex.”

“In most instances, when young women are forced to compete against young men in athletic competition, it places them at a fundamental disadvantage,” GOP Rep. Reggie Stoltzfus told members of the House education committee last week. “A disadvantage that threatens their athletic achievement and even collegiate scholarship prospects.”

The bills’ sponsors say it is an effort to maintain fairness and protect the integrity in women’s sports in Ohio, though none of the lawmakers have pointed to a single instance where this has been an issue in the state.

These proposals make Ohio the latest state to join the national debate over how transgender athletes can compete in high school and college sports, causing an outpouring of criticism from those in the transgender community and advocates.

If the bills passed, “trans people would lose opportunities and face higher risk factors, such as mental health struggles, substance dependency, and suicidal ideation,” Eliana Turan, the director of development for the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, told The Associated Press. “If we are going to talk about saving women and girls, let’s save all women and girls, trans females included.”

Idaho passed its law last year, and more than 20 states have considered such proposals this year. Bans have been enacted in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia. Florida lawmakers passed a bill, and South Dakota’s governor issued an executive order.

But while GOP lawmakers across the country take up the issue, in almost every case, sponsors of the proposals cannot cite a single instance in their own state or region where such participation has caused problems, according to an analysis by The Associated Press in March.

The same is true for the sponsors of the two bills in Ohio.

When asked during a committee hearing last week how many 12- and 13-year-old girls have had scholarships revoked due to being outperformed by transgender females, GOP Rep. Jena Powell, the other chief sponsor, mentioned a case specifically in Connecticut, but none in Ohio.

“Across the nation, there are girls who used to hold championships that are now held by biological males, which strips scholarship opportunities, medals, advancement in the sport,” said Powell, a Republican from western Ohio.

The organization in charge of making those determinations in the state, the Ohio High School Athletic Association, said that is not true in Ohio. Since the fall of 2015, the association has ruled in 48 cases of transgender students applying to compete and there have been only 11 transgender female approvals.

“Those 11 approvals have resulted in no disruption of competition regarding competitive equity and they have not caused any loss in female participation, championships or scholarship opportunities,” Tim Stried, a spokesperson for the association, said in a statement. “The OHSAA is confident that our policy, which is based on medical science, is appropriate to address transgender requests and works for the benefit of all student-athletes and member schools.”

The OHSAA doesn’t track participation after approval, so it is unclear to say how many of those transgender students have gone on to compete.

Committee members last week also expressed concern for the mental health impacts that both sides of the issue may experience.

“There is so much more wound up in this particular bill than just physiological advantage,” Democratic Rep. Mary Lightbody said. “This bill will harm the mental health of some of Ohio’s most vulnerable children.”

The lawmakers supporting the passage of the proposal said that is not their intention. But advocates say regardless of intent, the proposals would have irreparable harm.

“(These bills) would hurt trans women and girls by invalidating their identities, normalize and promote transphobic bullying, and effectively prevent trans youth from partaking in the natural human right of athletic participation,” Turan said.

COLUMBUS (AP) — Transgender girls would be banned from participating in female sports teams in high school or college in two bills introduced by Republican lawmakers in Ohio, which became the latest state to take up the contentious debate.

The proposals, titled the Save Women’s Sports Act, would require schools and higher education institutions in the state to designate “separate single-sex teams and sports for each sex.”

Lev continues to struggle and has an accident in Casualty – will anyone be able to help him? – RadioTimes

It has been a rough few weeks for Lev!

lev casualty

It’s not been smooth sailing for Lev Malinovsky (Uriel Emil Pollack) in Casualty following the breakdown of his marriage to Faith Cadogan (Kirsty Mitchell), which came about when she learned that he was gay.

His sexuality didn’t remain a secret for long after that. The couple got into a heated argument in the ED and Kirsty blurted out the news to everyone in earshot, leaving Lev mortified at being outed in such a public way.

There are two Casualty episodes airing this Saturday and Lev is set for another dramatic week when he suffers an accident on his quad bike and refuses to seek treatment.

Taking to motocross racing in a bid to forget his troubles, it soon becomes clear that Lev isn’t in the right headspace. He continues to take risks on the track and soon regrets it when he takes a tumble.

Arriving on the scene are Fenisha Khatri (Olivia D’Lima) and Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) and they are shocked by how angry Lev gets when they say they need to take him to the hospital for treatment – and how adamant he is about not going.

Will Iain be able to help Lev?

Iain realises that somebody needs to help Lev work through his issues and he decides to take on the task himself. Iain tells Lev some of his own problems and assures him that he is not the only one to feel like the world is against them.

It seems to do the trick as the two men bond and Iain reassures Lev that he should not feel embarrassed that his colleagues know he is gay – nobody is fazed by it and he has no reason to hide from everyone that cares about him.

Lev eventually does return to work and finds that Iain was right and nobody is judging him. Relieved to be accepted by everyone, he soon relaxes and ends up making a call to Xander, the man that he was involved with.

Tennessee Blocks Bill Honoring TJ Osborne First Openly Gay Country Musician to Sign with a Major Country Music Label – mxdwn.com

Kaido Strange May 8th, 2021 – 10:31 AM

Tennessee Blocks Bill Honoring TJ Osborne First Openly Gay Country Musician to Sign with a Major Country Music Label

Tennessee Republican representative Jeremy Faison blocked a measure that would see TJ Osborne, the first openly-gay country musician signed to a major country music label honored in his home state, as reported by Consequence.net. The bill had been passed through the Senate, but was blocked when Faison, who is head of the Republican Caucus in Tennessee had stopped it.

Faison has a long-standing history of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and blocking anything which he deems as ‘pro-LGBTQ+’, including stepping up to block a cyberbullying bill because too many queer youths were the victim of cyberbullying and tragically took their own lives. Faison’s argument was that the two were not in relation.

Osborne, who came out in a TIME Magazine interview of February this year, has reached out to Jeremy Faison on Twitter, stating in his tweet that he felt ‘hurt’ but would like to pick Faison’s brain over lunch. Jeremy Faison has accepted to meet both of the brothers for lunch.

TJ Osborne is one half of Brothers Osborne. His brother John is also in the band. The brothers were born in Maryland but grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. They played separately in different bands until they decided to form a band together. In 2011 they were signed to EMI Nashville, a subdivision of Capitol Records and Universal Music Group. In 2013 they released their debut single “Let’s Go There.”

TJ Osborne’s brother John is married to the musician Lucie Silvas.

Latest – Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton became the first Formula One driver to take 100 pole positions after lapping fastest for Mercedes in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying.

The 36-year-old was already way ahead of the rest in the record books, with retired Ferrari great and fellow seven-times champion Michael Schumacher second on the all-time list of polesitters with 68.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen joined the championship-leading Briton, who has an eight-point lead after three races, on the front row with a time 0.036 seconds slower and another wheel-to-wheel duel looming tonight.

Valtteri Bottas qualified third for Mercedes, a week after the Finn took pole in Portugal.

Hamilton’s pole continued a remarkable run of Mercedes domination, with the champions taking the top slot in every race at the Spanish circuit since now-retired Nico Rosberg began the sequence in 2013.

Only five constructors in the 71-year history of the sport have racked up 100 poles or more, and Hamilton’s milestone puts him far ahead even of Red Bull, who as a team have so far managed 64.

Hamilton took his first pole with McLaren in 2007.

His breakthrough came four years after the Kelly Grove Racing driver was mere days away from giving his career away.

Heimgartner’s win came in the Kiwi’s 161st career start, but in 2017, a career in finance broking seemed his only option.

Saturday belonged to Heimgartner; he converted pole into victory, his Ford Mustang crossing the line ahead of Chaz Mostert.

Championship leader, fellow New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen was seventh.

There are another two races today.

Reds clinch Super Rugby title

Skipper James O’Connor scored the winning try five minutes after the final hooter as the Queensland Reds beat the ACT Brumbies 19-16 to win the Super Rugby AU final in front of more than 40,000 fans at Lang Park in Brisbane.

The biggest crowd for a rugby match in the world this year gathered anticipating the coronation of Brad Thorn’s young side but the Brumbies almost spoiled the party with a mature display of percentage rugby.

Leading 16-12 but reduced to 13 men with two players in the sin bin, the reigning champions resisted surge after surge at their line in the final 10 minutes before the Reds finally moved the ball wide for flyhalf O’Connor to score.

An 11th successive home victory gave the Reds a second Super Rugby title a decade after their first, when they beat Thorn’s Canterbury Crusaders at the same stadium.

Evans runs out of energy

New Zealand driver Mitch Evans has suffered a disappointing finish in the latest Formula E race in Monaco.

The Jaguar driver was leading heading into the final lap, but was overtaken by reigning champion Antonio Felix Da Costa as they exited the tunnel and then dropped to third after Robin Frijns went past him at the finish.

Evans was unable to defend the lead due to his car’s reduced energy levels.

“I’m hurting pretty bad right now. I found myself in the lead but I had burnt quite a lot of energy to get there,” he said. “I was just trying to hang on for as long as possible.”

It was portugal’s Da Costa’s first win of the season, while Frenchman Frijns takes over the championship lead.

After seven races Frijns has 62 points to Mercedes driver Nyck de Vries’s 57 and Evans’ 54, with the top six drivers separated by just 14 points after seven rounds.

The championship now heads into a six-week break before the next round in Puebla, Mexico, on June 19.

Sharks beaten again

The Southland Sharks have suffered their second straight loss in the men’s National Basketball League going down 85-73 to Hawke’s Bay in Napier.

The perennial contenders had suffered a big loss to Wellington Saints the night before and struggled to keep pace with the Hawks who were led by Derone Raukawa with 28 points.

The Nelson Giants secured their first win of the competition beating the Franklin Bulls 107-94 in Pukekohe.

The Otago Nuggets improved to a 2-1 record after downing the winless Manawatu Jets 108-96 in Dunedin.

Unbeaten Saints top the table with 6 points, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland Huskies, Otago Nuggets, Franklin Bulls and Southland Sharks have 4.

Meanwhile at the Basketball New Zealand Awards evening, Tall Fern Penina Davidson was named MVP for the year, as well as Female Player of the Year. Tall Black Corey Webster was named Male Player of the Year.

The night culminated with Basketball New Zealand bestowing its highest honour upon former Tall Blacks coach Keith Mair. Mair joins Pero Cameron, Anita Hannen, Zena Gay, Sir Lance Cross, Stan Hill, and Carolyn Grey as a Basketball New Zealand Legend.

Italian wins opening Grio stage

The Italian Filippo Ganna has won the opening time trial stage of the Giro d’Italia.

It is the second straight year that Gana has taken the opening stage, this time beating compatriot Edoardo Affini by ten seconds on the flat 8.6km course in Turin.

The world champion, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers, reached an average speed of 58.748km/h.

He’ll wear the Maglia Rosa on Stage 2, a 179km ride held entirely on his home soil in the Piedmont region.

New Zealand’s George Bennett was 52nd, 41 seconds behind Ganna, while Patrick Bevin was another three seconds back.

Another title for Bayern

Bayern Munich celebrated their record-extending ninth consecutive Bundesliga title with a 6-0 demolition of Borussia Moenchengladbach and a hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski, who edged closer to a 49-year-old scoring record.

The champions had sealed the title before kickoff following RB Leipzig’s 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund earlier today.

Lewandowski, who now has 39 goals, one shy of Gerd Mueller’s imposing record of 40 league goals in one Bundesliga season dating back to 1971/72, needed only two minutes to open his account with a shot from a tight angle.

Thomas Mueller, who along with David Alaba becomes the first player in Bundesliga history to win 10 league titles, stabbed in their second in the 23rd before a sensational flying Lewandowski volley 11 minutes later.

Lewandowski sent keeper Yann Sommer the wrong way to convert a 66th minute penalty for his hat-trick and a clear shot at Mueller’s record with two games left.

Bayern, who have now won 30 Bundesliga titles since the introduction of the top division in 1963, and 31 German league crowns in total, are on 74 points, with Leipzig in second on 64 following their 3-2 loss at Dortmund, who move up to fourth.

LGBT+ high school students told to ‘die’ in ‘appalling and terrifying’ graffiti daubed over a Pride flag – Yahoo Eurosport UK

LGBT+ students were told to “die” in “appalling and terrifying” homophobic graffiti daubed over a Pride flag.

Abusive slurs were scrawled on a white board that had a Pride flag projected onto it at Broadland High School in Norfolk, according to the North Norfolk News.

Separately, a student was filmed making vile remarks about gay and trans people. The school has reportedly asked students to delete the recording to prevent it being shared widely.

In an email to the North Norfolk News, a member of the school community said they believed the incidents counted as hate crimes.

They also accused officials at Broadland High School of not taking “appropriate action” in response to the hateful incidents.

The school community member, who has not been named, told the newspaper: “The school has been passive in response to this, with those who filmed it being asked to remove the content so it cannot be shared.

“I personally believe this is appalling and terrifying for the LGBT+ community.”

A spokesperson for the school insisted that the institution took “immediate action” when it received reports of the two anti-LGBT+ incidents.

Anti-LGBT+ hate incident in Norfolk school ‘completely out of line’ with standards

“We have robust reporting in place to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing, and so were made aware of an incident on Tuesday which was filmed and photographed and was completely out of line with our standards and expectations,” the spokesperson told the North Norfolk News.

“We took immediate action to deal with the situation and to implement appropriate sanctions for the small number of students involved.”

The school said it will provide “additional education” to students around LGBT+ issues and will inform “appropriate authorities” about the incidents.

“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive, open and accepting school community,” the spokesperson added.

Last year, research form the British LGBT Awards revealed that homophobic and transphobic bullying are alarmingly common in Britain’s schools.

The survey of 4,000 LGBT+ young people aged under 25 found that half had faced abuse from fellow pupils, while just one in four felt comfortable coming out while still in school.

Almost 80 per cent of respondents said they had been victimised with verbal abuse while in school.

Iran: 20 year old youth Alireza Fazeli Monfared beheaded by half brother, cousins for being gay – OpIndia

Alireza Fazeli Monfared, a 20 year old Iranian youth, was murdered by his brother and cousins due to his sexual orientation. He was homosexual and his murdered is believed to be due to an act of honour killing.

According to reports, he was murdered three male members of his family opened a letter from the country’s conscription service which stated that he had been exempted from the two-year compulsory military service because of “moral and sexual depravities such as transsexualism”.

According to reports, Monfared’s partner has revealed that he was murdered by his half-brother and two others. “Alireza’s killing as a result of his sexual orientation being stated on his military service [exemption] card has once again provided proof for our warning several years ago about the risks caused by the military service exemption process for gay Iranian men and underlines the need for legislation to prevent these safety risks,” activist group 6rang said in a statement.

The murderers phoned the mother of Alireza Fazeli Monfared and told her where to find the beheaded body of her son. She has reportedly been hospitalised with shock.

The Iran International report stated further, “6Rang also wrote that it had warned earlier that the laws allow the law enforcement, judiciary, employers and educational authorities “to identify gay men with only once glance at the military service exemption card,” thereby depriving those “diagnosed” with such “depravities” from employment in government organizations and the private sector.”

His partner said that they were planning to move to Turkey to seek asylum in Europe. The three accused have reportedly been arrested. According to the report, the Persian website of the BBC had reported on May 7th that Monfared was in imminent danger from his family. LGBT are persecuted in Islamic countries, often by law, due to religious sanction against same sex relationships.

Exclusive! Sexy new hotspots! Prepare to party! – Queerty

Nightlife keeps booming along with everyone’s hormonal levels, as the Roaring Twenties revival that I promised you starts becoming a drunken reality.

Downstairs at the popular glam Chelsea restaurant Elmo is a new hangout, Coby Club, named after Coby Yee, the late owner and star exotic dancer of Forbidden City in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The place looks like an upscale opium den, all sexy and plush, and it features a mixed crowd, nibbles, and pop-up entertainment by chanteuse extraordinaire Marissa Rosen and others.

Over yummy comfort food sent down from Elmo, owner Bob Pontarelli told me that one of his other hotspots, the long-running Chelsea gay bar Barracuda, is undergoing a renovation that will bring about a new bar, stage, lounge furniture, and HVAC system.

“Make no mistake, it’ll still be Barracuda, not a fancy bar,” he assured me, “but it was time. It’ll reopen when you can really open and be flush against each other without masks.”

And on August 25th, he said, a lot of the drag queens that started there (which is virtually everyone who’s ever tucked) will come in for the 25th-anniversary gala, where the sequins will really fly.

By the way, Pontarelli and I agreed that Mayor Bill de Blasio said lots of NYC venues can start up again as of July 1st because he doesn’t want Pride–the last weekend of June–to become too big and cause a health hazard.

That’s OK with me, partly because I don’t want gays to be blamed for yet another plague and because I’m again appearing in the Lavender Effect’s Virtual Pride Parade, which will stream live on YouTube on Sunday, May 30th, to help kick off the next month’s safe and fabulous festivities.

Update: After de Blasio’s pronouncement, Governor Andrew Cuomo one-upped him by weighing in that New York State can reopen on May 19th, within guidelines. But that still doesn’t mean there’ll be a Heritage of Pride parade, just virtual events, plus a few in-person happenings, like the PrideFest on Sunday, June 27th. On the same day, there will also be the third annual in-person Queer Pride March, done by the Reclaim Pride Coalition, and it will employ “risk reduction strategies” while being wonderfully corporation-free.

In Hell’s Kitchen, on 41st and 9th, a queer conglomerate consisting of Daniel Nardicio, Taylor Shubert, Samuel Benedict, Adam Klesh, and Gil Neary is coming up with Red Eye, which will be a cute coffee bar by day and a buzzy club at night, atingle with caffeinated booze drinks and dancing.

It will also have a virtual TV studio, Red Eye Studios, which will allow them to add a live streaming element to the shows and offer live podcasts on various pop culture topics. DJs will include Nicky Doll (from Drag Race), Ty Sunderland, and Johnny Dynell. Nardicio says he’s mostly working with “younger, prettier partners, which sort of makes me Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life. They’ll be running around and I’ll be yelling, ‘Girls!’ to keep them in line.”

After a proposed soft opening in September, the place is angling for an October opening, and that’s good because in that gayborhood, Therapy, Posh, Barrage, and Ninth Avenue Saloon have all shuttered (though a new owner has taken over the Therapy space for renewed life). So here’s to a whole new chapter in fun-despite-it-all.

Let’s party till we’re red-eyed. Girls!

Anne Heche makes a dig at ex-girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres in TikTok video – Daily Mail

Anne Heche made a dig at her ex-girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday as she morphed into the TV star while using a ‘shapeshifting’ app on TikTok.

The actress, 51, who dated the host, 63, from 1997 until 2000, shared a video of herself taking part in the challenge where it transforms people into celebrities they look like.

Starting the TikTok video, Anne says: ‘Who do you think I get?’ to which her face slowly turns into a throwback photo of Ellen taken at the 1994 Cable Ace Awards – three years before they started dating.

Waving her finger to the camera, the actress exclaims: ‘Omg, not her! Let’s try again…’

Anne is left happy when her next celebrity lookalike is Charlize Theron as she jokes: ‘I’m not mad about that!’

For the final look, the star is ‘shapeshifted’ into herself as she fist-pumps the air and declares: ‘There we go!’

Yet fellow users were quick to point out that being turned into her ex Ellen shouldn’t have come as a surprise as you pick the picture of the star you want to turn into.

One person said: ‘But you pick the picture out yourself on this app haha’ followed by laughing emojis.

While a different account put: ‘Don’t you have to pick your own photos with this app?? [laughing emoji] you do.’

It comes after Anne claimed her ex Ellen didn’t want her to ‘dress sexy’ as she rated her past red carpet looks in a bizarre video shared to TikTok last month.

The actress, who dated the host, 63, from 1997 until 2000, brought up a throwback image of the pair posing at the 1998 Golden Globes ceremony, which saw the screen star sport a velvet duster coat.

Insisting she wasn’t a fan of the look, the Another World icon said: ‘Why do I look like a hippie? It’s because Ellen didn’t want me to dress sexy.’

The performer went on to flash a thumbs down as she gave the appearance a zero out of 10.

Shortly after the couple dated, the director tied the knot to Coley Laffoon, while the talk show presenter started a relationship with her now-wife Portia de Rossi.

Anne’s divorce from the cameraman was finalised in 2009, two years after they initially ended their romance.

The blonde later started dating Men In Trees co-star James Tupper in 2007, before they split in 2018.

Ernest Angley, the 99-Year-Old Abusive Bigoted Gay Televangelist, is Dead – Friendly Atheist – Patheos

Pastor Ernest Angley died yesterday at the age of 99, putting an end to a life full of abuse, scandal, and the worst kinds of Christian hypocrisy.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s likely because Angley was a cult-like figure who ran the Grace Cathedral church in Akron, Ohio. Just a few years ago, members of the church sued him for never paying them despite working at his for-profit Cathedral Buffet restaurant. They were considered volunteers, but that’s illegal for the same reason McDonald’s can’t hire “volunteers” to prepare your food: If customers can’t tell the different between paid and unpaid staffers, something’s wrong. Sadly, Angley won that case when an Appeals Court said the minimum wage laws only applied if employees expected to get paid… and these volunteers didn’t.

In 2017, a county government sued Angley on behalf of a 76-year-old woman with dementia who they said was coerced into writing his church a check for $340,000.

That same week, he was sued over a defaulted $3.6 million loan for his broadcasting network.

But shit really his the fan in 2018 when a former staffer, Brock Miller, sued Angley for sexual abuse that occurred over the course of several years. When Miller resigned from the church, Angley’s staff told the congregation he was a liar, drug addict, alcoholic, and an adulterer. Miller’s allegations were absolutely mindblowing:

The first allegation of sexual misconduct Miller alleges in his lawsuit happened just prior to his wedding. Still a virgin at age 19, he had questions about sex that he wanted answered. He naturally went to Angley.

“And instead of giving me an answer like a pastor should, he said, well, I’m going to have to see your penis,” Miller recalled. “I trusted this man, I really did. I trusted him. I didn’t think he had any bad intentions.”

Angley advised Brock to masturbate. He complied.

Years later, when Brock’s wife became ill, Angley, he said, blamed the couple’s sex life. He ordered more special massages… just for Brock.

Brock’s moment of clarity came in Angley’s bedroom during another anointing. Laying in Angley’s circular bed, Miller naked, as usual.

“He said, ‘I’d really like to teach you how to give a good [passionate kiss] and I said, instantly, I said, No! No! And it was just like the veil was completely lifted from my eyes and I saw him in that moment for the monster that he is.”

That case was eventually settled in 2020 for an undisclosed amount.

In 2019, an old audio recording emerged in which Angley admitted to having gay sex with one of his staffers despite his long history of preaching against homosexuality.

So there you go. There’s your snapshot of this man’s life. Just a constant stream of people speaking out against him for all the sexual and emotional abuse he caused, exposing him as yet another Christian con artist.

And now, at long last, the “faith healer” and lifelong liar is dead.

Pastor, evangelist and author Rev. Ernest Angley has gone to Heaven to be with his Lord and Master at 99. He touched multitudes of souls worldwide with the pure Word of God confirmed with signs, wonders, miracles and healings. He truly pleased God in all things

Weird how they completely skipped the abuse claims. And if God is “pleased” with Angley, it only reveals the moral bankruptcy of the religion.

Bob Dyer, the (now-retired) reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal who did more than just about anyone to expose Angley’s abuse, summarized Angley’s life in a matter befitting a corrupt televangelist:

Angley’s odd speaking voice, mannerisms and toupee made him an easy target for comedians. Superstar Robin Williams mimicked Angley with a character named “Rev. Earnest Angry.” Williams also spoofed the preacher on “Saturday Night Live,” on a comedy album and in the TV sitcom “Mork & Mindy.”

But while the comics and critics were piling on, Angley was spawning a megachurch that brought in so much money that by 2005 he was able to buy a $26 million Boeing 747, which he used for overseas mission trips.

[Former members] claimed the church is a dangerous cult where pregnant women are encouraged to have abortions, childless men are encouraged to have vasectomies and Angley — who preached vehemently against the “sin” of homosexuality — was himself a gay man who personally examined the genitals of the male parishioners before and after their surgeries. They also said he turned a blind eye to sexual abuse by other members of his church.

The saddest thing about this is that Angley never faced any serious consequences after decades of hurting other people. The lawsuits and articles never stopped him from preaching or holding sway over other people. But let’s hope he takes his entire despicable ministry into the ground with him. Those victims deserve so much better than he ever gave them. Maybe now they’ll finally be able to get some closure.
