Disney’s rebooting ‘The Proud Family’ with some amazing LGBTQ+ representation – Motherly Inc.

Disney’s The Proud Family” is getting a reboot! Even though the original show was amazing (Beyonce and Solange Knowles performed the theme song–I mean come ON how cool is that?!) the reboot looks like it’ll be just as much of a crowd-pleaser.

Plus, the revival will feature LGBTQ+ representation, which will undoubtedly be incredibly meaningful for many families who will watch.

Disney‘s “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” will pick up the story of its central character Penny Proud and also include the rest of the Proud family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and her grandmother Suga Mama (and Puff!) And of course, we can’t forget about Penny’s pals Dijonay Jones, LaCienega Boulevardez and Zoey Howzer.

The series reboot will be comprised of original cast members and a few new names: Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter. Quinto and Porter will play Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins and Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins, the adoptive parents of 14-year-old Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, voiced by the brilliant Keke “Sorry to this man” Palmer.

For the last eight years, GLAAD has analyzed each of the major film studios on their representation of queer characters, and Disney has, unfortunately, landed at the bottom of the list every year.

The fact that a huge, globally-renowned entertainment company like Disney sees the value in queer representation for children and families but is actually executing it via one of their most popular shows, well, that’s worth noting. And honestly, there’s nothing Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter can’t do—raise your hand if you’re looking forward to their brilliant voice work!

The show is currently in production at Disney Television Animation and set to launch in 2022 on Disney+.

From a Popular YouTuber Coming Out to OITNB Lesbian Couple Celebrating Mother’s Day Together, This Week in Beyond the G – SouthFloridaGayNews.com

This week read about Gigi Gorgeous Getty coming out as pansexual, Sports Illustrated copy chief talking about her asexuality, and Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli introducing their new daughter on Mother’s Day via social media.

Youtuber Gigi Gorgeous Comes Out as Pansexual

Transgender YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous Getty isn’t a stranger to the LGBT community. In fact, coming out as pansexual is the sensation’s fourth time coming out.

She came out as gay initially, before she realized she was transgender. Then, the YouTube star came out as gay again.

After doing some soul-searching with her significant other, Nats Getty, Gigi came out as pansexual.

“It was actually through my husband Nats that this kind of was unlocked inside of me,” she said in a YouTube video. “It’s always been there, this girl has always been inside of me, but it took this stage of my life really to open up, and I’m ready to share this with you guys.”

Nats recently came out as transgender and nonbinary.

“Over the years, I’ve realized that I didn’t fall in love with Nats because of his gender,” Gigi explained. “I fell in love with the person that he is. I just want to let everybody know that I am pansexual.”

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli, who both worked on Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” introduced the world to their new daughter on Mother’s Day via Instagram.

“Four weeks ago today, our daughter came into the world and changed everything. We are so happy, so grateful, and so tired,” Morelli wrote on Instagram.

George Elizabeth was born on April 11, 2021, but Morelli and Wiley waited until Mother’s Day to break the news to their followers.

“Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for,” Wiley captioned her Instagram post of her daughter.

Fans of the couple left thousands of comments between the two posts celebrating the baby’s birth and wishing the couple a happy first Mother’s Day.

Sports Illustrated Copy Chief Speaks Out About Her Asexuality

Julie

Julie Kliegman. Photo via @jmkliegman, Twitter.

Julie Kliegman doesn’t hold back when it comes to writing about hard-hitting topics like mental health and personal identity. In fact, she came out as asexual after writing about asexual “BoJack Horseman” character Todd Chavez for The Ringer.

“Asexual people, it’s not that they lack a sex drive, but they aren’t sexually attracted to people, or they’re varying degrees of sexually attracted to people, but not in a way — I don’t want to say ‘typical person’ in this way — but a ‘typical person’ is,” Kliegman said on an Outsports podcast. “But that doesn’t make them any less human.”

Kliegman is not only asexual but also nonbinary. She didn’t always know it though — it took a long time for her to realize her identity.

“I think once you think about that long enough, you’re like, ‘Oh wait, cisgender people don’t really spend that much time thinking about this today,’” Kliegman said. “It’s not that I always rejected the label of ‘woman,’ but I always knew in the back of my head that it didn’t perfectly fit me either.”

Online beauty pageant for LGBT community – Telangana Today

Hyderabad: Positivity has become the most wanted trait during these tough times and providing a whole lot of it, acting as a distraction from the pandemic apart from as a platform for people from the LGBT community to showcase their talents, is Mobbera Foundation, a city-based NGO. An online beauty pageant is how Mobbera is spreading positive vibes, with this year being the second season of the pageant.

A unique element of this pageant, the first round of which concluded recently, is its emphasis on inclusivity.

“Beauty pageants are infamous for their exclusionary ways but in this one, we are striving hard to break social and patriarchal barriers. This pageant challenges social norms by providing an inclusive platform for everyone, irrespective of their age, gender or sexual orientation. That is why we have titles — Transface Mobbera, Unicorn Mobbera (gender-fluid), in addition to the traditional titles such as Miss and Mister,” shares Sandipan of Mobbera Foundation.

Going a step ahead this year, the event has an HIV positive participant as well, one who is not afraid of being vocal about the condition. “We are taking the inclusivity further this year,” said Sandipan.

According to Sandipan, they didn’t have plans of conducting the pageant this year but based on the requests they received, they decided to take it up.

“We got a lot of requests asking for the pageant and that is how we ended up doing it again. We got a higher number of participants this time and we are gearing up for the second round, where the participants can showcase their talent, irrespective of what it is,” says Sandy.

The final result of the pageant will be announced on May 23, after the third round as well.

Codes to access “secret” categories on Netflix – The Artistree

This list compiled by technology experts will make life easier for those who do not have a clear idea of what to see, even those who are just looking to have a good time with their family.
Lucero Natarén / Aquínoticias

Netflix has become an “ocean” of content, which can often be confusing for the casual user of the streaming service, even when there are categories. The good news is that there are codes that allow access to “secret” collections when using the platform through a computer and a browser.

This title filtering works because each category is associated with a specific code. To use them, just add the code to the end of the following URL in the navigation bar: http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/, for example, http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/ 10118, in this case, the category Comics and superheroes movies will be accessed.

The following list presents the codes that order the titles in a more specific way that will make life easier for the undecided, for the most demanding, or for those who want to share the platform with the smallest of the home or with the whole family.

Welsh bishops welcome proposed ban on gay conversion therapy – Episcopal News Service

Welsh bishops welcome proposed ban on gay conversion therapy

Posted 3 hours ago

[Church in Wales] The Bench of Bishops in the Church in Wales welcomes the announcement in the Queen’s Speech that the United Kingdom Government will ban gay conversion therapy.

We believe that human sexuality is a gift of God to be cherished and honored. It is an intrinsic part of who we are as human beings and an expression of God’s glorious diversity in creation.

Anything which seeks to suggest that there is something inherently wrong or sinful in those who are non-heterosexual or which seeks to force people to try and change their sexuality is, we believe, wrong. It is both abusive and traumatizing; as those who have experienced such “therapy” can testify.

US Restores LGBTQ+ Protections from Healthcare Discrimination – Verywell Health

Key Takeaways

  • The HHS announced that the federal government will protect gay and transgender people against sex discrimination in health care.
  • Several states have introduced or passed laws aimed at limiting health care for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Avoiding health care because of fear of discrimination can put LGBTQ+ people at risk of medical issues.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced this week that it will take steps to protect gay and transgender individuals against discrimination in healthcare settings. This marks a reversal in rules set by the Trump administration in 2020.

The action by the Biden administration restores a policy established during former President Barack Obama’s administration. In 2016, the Obama administration introduced rules clarifying that LGBTQ+ individuals would be protected under the federal health care discrimination provision. Rules established by the Trump administration reversed provisions of the law that extended civil rights protections in health care to cover gender identity and abortion.

“The Supreme Court has made clear that people have a right not to be discriminated against on the basis of sex and receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in the agency’s statement. “Fear of discrimination can lead individuals to forgo care, which can have serious negative health consequences. It is the position of the Department of Health and Human Services that everyone—including LGBTQ people—should be able to access health care, free from discrimination or interference, period.”

Experts praise the decision but stress that this is just the beginning for policies and work that needs to be done.

“This is an important and much welcomed first step,” Ellen LaPointe, CEO of Fenway Health, a multi-office medical practice that serves LGBTQ+ patients, tells Verywell. “But much more needs to be done to ensure that everyone—including the most marginalized and at-risk people in our communities—is afforded the same rights and access to healthcare.”

What Does the Rule Do?

In the HHS statement, Becerra states that the agency will now align with a Supreme Court workplace discrimination decision made last year. This case established that federal laws against sex discrimination on the job also apply to gay and transgender people.

Because of this, the HHS Office for Civil Rights will now begin investigating complaints of sex discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity once more.

“This is a critical moment for the LGBTQ community to know there are people fighting for them,” Robert Garofalo, MD, MPH, division chief of adolescent medicine at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, tells Verywell.

Paula Neira, JD, MSN, an attorney and the clinical program director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender Health, tells Verywell that the action by the Biden administration potentially increases the consequences for healthcare providers, health systems, and insurance companies that discriminate.

Experts expect some state governments to legally challenge this rule.

Restricted Access to Health Care Under Trump

The Trump administration’s rollback of protections against discrimination in health care opened the door for a host of anti-transgender bills nationwide.

According to information from Fenway Health, since the rollback, over 250 anti-transgender bills have been filed, with eight signed into law and another 10 awaiting governors’ signatures. Examples include:

  • Arkansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota have enacted laws permitting healthcare providers to deny service to LGBTQIA+ people
  • Arkansas enacted a law prohibiting the provision of gender-affirming health care (hormone therapy) to transgender and gender-diverse youth
  • Lawmakers in Montana passed a bill restricting access to gender-affirming health care for youth, but it has not yet been signed into law
  • An additional 35 bills have been filed that would restrict access to gender-affirming health care for youth; a bill filed in Alabama would make it a felony to do so

Denying medically appropriate health care to transgender youth leads to immediate harm, LaPointe says. Additionally, a 2020 study by researchers from The Fenway Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital found that lack of access to gender-affirming health care increases the odds of lifetime suicidal ideation.

Another 2020 study by researchers at The Fenway Institute published in LGBT Health found that frequent exposure to media coverage related to the filing of anti-transgender bills was associated with an 18% increase in symptoms of depression and a 26% increase in anxiety.

“As a physician, and as a queer person, I’m stymied that we continue to have this discussion,” Garofalo says. “Without these protections, we know that access to health care on the margins—which are the populations we’re talking about here—may choose to not seek out health care because they are worried about being turned away or being othered.”

More Work Needs to Be Done

“We’re celebrating this as a win, and yet all it does is open a door,” Garofalo says. “There’s still a lot to do to make sure everyone feels welcome coming through the door and is treated with empathy, cultural competency, and cultural respect.”

Many healthcare providers need to take personal steps to improve their care for people in the LGBTQ+ community.

“Healthcare providers may not be malicious, but may just not know how to provide culturally competent care for this population,” Christy Mallory, the legal director at the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy at the UCLA School of Law, tells Verywell. “That’s sometimes exacerbated by the fact that people in the many people in the LGBTQ community tend to be insured at lower rates and many rely on Medicaid and other public benefits.”

LaPointe says many LGBTQ+ individuals may not even know that some private practices and academic medical centers may have healthcare providers who are themselves part of the community or simply enthusiastic to treat this community. “And the options have expanded with telehealth,” LaPointe says. “At Fenway, telehealth has vastly expanded our reach, especially where there may be no providers for someone to turn to.”

What This Means For You

If you are seeking care and have trouble finding a physician, reach out to academic medical centers near you and ask if they have a center or providers who specialize in LGBTQ+ care. You can also find a list of health providers who welcome members of the LGBTQ+ community here.

New Bachelorette Katie Thurston sorry for ‘hurting LGBT community’ – PinkNews

Katie Thurston, the star of the upcoming season of The Bachelorette, has apologised for ‘hurting the LGBT+ community’ over an Instagram post with her friend Casandra Suarez. (Instagram/@thekatiethurston)

New Bachelorette star Katie Thurston has apologised after facing backlash from LGBT+ fans over an Instagram post.

Thurston was criticised for queerbaiting after sharing a photo of her friend, Bachelor contestant Casandra Suarez, kissing her on the neck.

The two were sitting in front of “Girls, girls, girls” sign, and the now-deleted post was captioned: “Whatever floats your boat”. Suarez reportedly commented: “So did Katie actually end up with me, yes or no?”

Many thought Thurston, who appeared on the 25th season of The Bachelor, might have been dropping hints about her sexuality, with some hopeful that the reality show might be featuring queer Bachelorette.

However, she clarified the post was not a “statement about my sexuality” and was “simply a friendship post”.

She continued: “I’ve never spoken publicly about my sexuality nor am I doing so with this picture. Nothing but love for everyone.”

Amid criticism, Thurston deleted the post and issued an apology after realising “how many people from the LGBTQ+ [community] I hurt”.

She said she “read the comments” and understood why “the post was “offensive”.

“I will continue to learn from my mistakes,” Thurston wrote. “I want to always be an ally and today I’m sorry I let you down.”

Thurston’s comments come shortly after former Bachelor star Colton Underwood came out as gay, becoming the first lead in the franchise’s history to do so.

Underwood also recently revealed that he was being threatened after someone saw him at a spa known for catering to gay clientele.

The unidentified person threatened to “out” the former NFL player and claimed to have nude pictures of him.

The incident led to Underwood coming out in an interview with Good Morning America – and to him winning his own Netflix reality show with “gay guide” Gus Kenworthy.

The Bachelorette season 17, starting Katie Thurston, is set to start on 7 June.

The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor David Snowdon and Mayoress, Councillor Dianne Snowdon with the Rainbow Flag flying above Sunderland Civic Centre in support of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB)

Landmarks including National Trust owned Penshaw Monument, Northern Spire bridge, Hylton Castle, Fulwell Mill and Keel Square and the white lighthouse at Seaburn will be lit up in rainbow colours on Sunday, May 16, in support of the day.

Councillor Snowdon, said: “It is wonderful to witness the Rainbow Flag flying prominently across the city and I feel that this year’s theme ‘Together, resisting, supporting, healing’ has particular resonance given the struggles that we have all faced over the last 18 months.

“Many of us have suffered from loneliness and isolation over the last year but it must be even more difficult if you are from the LGBT community in an unsupportive family environment from which you can’t escape.

“Sadly, intolerance does exist, and we must work together to ensure that everyone in our city feels and is safe.

“Nobody should have to put up with discrimination and intolerance.

“LGBT young people in particular are at high risk of intolerant attitudes and hostility, and in recent years, online bullying and hate speech has added to their plight.

“Collectively we must work to address these attitudes where they come to the fore and I would encourage anyone who is subject to hate speech to report it.”

IDAHO (International Day against Homophobia) was launched in 2004 and in 2009 became IDAHOT when transgender was added to recognise the different issues between sexual orientation and gender expression.

In 2015, biphobia was added to acknowledge the specific issues faced by bisexual people.

Anyone who has suffered violence or hostility because of their sexual orientation, gender identity (including Trans), race, disability, age, race or faith can call: (0191) 520 5550 confidentially.

Christian woman tries to ‘exorcise’ gay teen in viral TikTok video – PinkNews

TikToker @seliabrookes posted her first ever video on Wednesday (12 May), and it has already racked up almost 3,000 comments and more than 45,000 likes.

It shows the gay teenager standing silently at her bedroom door, while a woman, presumed to be her mother, stands in the performing an exorcism on her.

The woman shouts, getting steadily louder: “Thank you Jesus! Demons, foul spirits, lying spirits, Satan, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus, the name above all names!”

Raising her arms in the air, she shouts: “Praise you Jesus!”

As her mother walks away the teenager turns to the camera as her face crumples into tears, before walking towards the person filming her.

The young TikToker overlaid the video with the text: “If you’re wondering what religious abuse is, here.”

She also used the hashtags “abuse”, “religion”, “LGBTQ” and “emancipation”.

Commenters expressed their sympathy with the teen, with one writing: “No hate like Christian love.”

Another said: “As a Christian, I’ll never understand how this is okay. This is the complete opposite of what God stands for.”

Others said they could relate to her experience, with one commenter writing: “I had family like this and it’s heartbreaking and unfair.”

“My mom used to beat me to go to a Pentecostal church where they told me I was going to hell at eight years old for wearing pants,” said another TikTok user.

The TikTok was later shared on Twitter where many users compared the woman to the mother in Stephen King’s Carrie.

One Twitter user pointed out: “Pretty sure Jesus wasn’t about hate. So this lady ain’t going to the place she thinks she is.”

Colton Underwood Regrets Not Joining First Openly Gay NFL Player – TV Shows Ace

Colton Underwood has had a huge week in the media after revealing he was blackmailed to come out as gay. Now, he’s talking about his regrets and one of those was not supporting the first openly gay NFL player.

Colton Underwood and the NFL

Before his time on The Bachelorette Colton actually played for the NFL. So, it’s no surprise that this is included in one of his regrets now. Michael Sam was the first NFL player to come out as gay. Colton regrets not joining him in that when he had the chance ScreenRant says.

“I had the opportunity in 2014 when I entered the draft. Michael Sam came out.” Colton said. However, he heard all of the negative things that were being said about him and opted not to join. “The football and athletic community is not ready for gay people,” he says.

While it should have been inspirational for Colton to see this happen it ended up scaring him more than anything.

“If anything, Michael Sam coming out and being so public about it put me in the closet even further because I didn’t want to be like Michael, in the sense that I didn’t want it to be negative or bad,” Colton says.

Now, Colton has made the decision to apologize personally to Michael for not coming forward and being supportive in that moment. Colton says he wishes he was brave enough to come out at that time so he could be more supportive of Michael. Not to mention, Colton’s life would be drastically different if he had come out sooner.

For a while, he was on Grindr, the gay dating app, but has since left that platform. He actually joined that app under a fake name in 2016 or 2017. So, he has known for a long time that this was something he was going to pursue, regardless of his time on The Bachelorette and as The Bachelor.

Meena Harris says you can’t fight for LGBT+ rights and ignore ‘Palestinian oppression’ – PinkNews

Meena Harris has said people can’t advocate for LGBT+ rights while ignoring the oppression of people in Palestine.

Harris, an American lawyer, author and niece of vice president Kamala Harris, spoke out on behalf of Palestine after at least 119 people in Gaza were killed – including 31 children – by Israeli air strikes. An estimated 900 have been injured, according to The New York Times.

Meanwhile, eight people have been killed in Israel by rockets fired by Hamas, according to authorities in the country.

In an Instagram post, Meena Harris questioned why people are happy to advocate for some social justice causes while ignoring the situation in Palestine.

“One cannot advocate for racial equality, LGBT and women’s rights, condemn corrupt and abusive regimes and other injustices yet choose to ignore the Palestinian oppression,” a graphic shared on Instagram by Harris read.

“It does not add up. You cannot pick and choose whose human rights matter more.”

Harris captioned the post: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah.”

More than 100 people have been killed in violent scenes in Palestine

Her comments come after days of violence in Palestine and Israel. The outbreak of violence has been blamed on a number of issues, including legal efforts to forcibly evict Palestinian families from their homes in Jerusalem.

Tensions escalated further when Israeli forces stopped Palestinian people from celebrating Ramadan at Damascus Gate, an old city entrance where people often congregate at the end of the fasting period.

Israeli police subsequently raided Aqsa Mosque, which resulted in 330 Palestinians being wounded. On Friday (14 May), Gaza was bombarded with artillery by Israeli ground forces.

Authorities in Gaza said there have been more than 150 air strikes since violence broke out, while the Israeli military accused Hamas of firing 1,800 rockets.

While Meena Harris has expressed her support for Palestine, the White House has done no such thing.

Earlier this week, Joe Biden said: “One of the things that I have seen, thus far, is that there has not been a significant overreaction. The question is, how we get to a point where – they get to a point where there is a significant reduction in the attacks, particularly the rocket attacks that are indiscriminately fired into population centres.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still together proving true love isn’t dead – PopBuzz

14 May 2021, 17:15

Yes, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still married. And yes, we’re crying happy tears about it.

Life can be unpredictable and volatile at times, but one thing you can rely on is Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s relationship. Can you believe the Scooby-Doo icons are STILL together? Yes, you might not know it, but Freddie and Sarah have one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting marriages and, seriously, nothing brings us more joy.

Freddie and Sarah’s love story started in 1997 on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer. The pair got engaged in April 2001 and got hitched in Mexico in September 2002. That means they’ve been married for 18 years. And in Hollywood, that’s literally a lifetime.

Now, you’re probably thinking that Freddie and Sarah fell for each other whilst playing lovers, however, the couple didn’t have a lot of scenes together in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Their relationship actually started as a friendship with Freddie giving Sarah lifts to and from the set because she couldn’t drive.

“She didn’t have a driver’s license. She didn’t know how to drive. And we were shooting in Southport, North Carolina, which was an hour’s drive from the nearest Wilmington, which was the biggest city that was closest to us,” Freddie told US Weekly in April 2020.

“It was an hour drive just to get to the gym. And when we transported the film down to South Park, she had no way to get up there. So, I started driving her, and that’s when her and I became friends. And we just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything. ‘Cause she was a born and raised New Yorker and I was a born and raised L.A. kid, and we just looked at everything like night and day.”

But wait, it gets even more adorable. Freddie and Sarah bonded over their mutual love of food (if you’ve peeped on Freddie’s Instagram you’ll know he’s an excellent chef). He continued: “By the end of the movie, I just wanted to be friends with her because I thought she was too skinny and I wanted to cook for her. Because that’s what my family does. And so, we started this weekly barbecue thing at her house, and me and my cousins would come over and cook food for her and her friends. And then we’d make sure everybody ate, and that was kind of how our friendship began.”

As they say, the rest is history. Freddie and Sarah have continued to thrive and now they have two children together: Charlotte, 11, and Rocky, 8. They’ve also gone on to star alongside each other in more movies and if you can work with your other half, you know your relationship is pretty solid.

Both have starred in She’s All That, Happily N’Ever After, Robot Chicken and Star Wars Rebels. And of course, how could we forget the Scooby-Doo franchise. Freddie played Fred Jones and Sarah played Daphne Blake in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

When they’re not acting, you can find them on Instagram sharing cute snippets of their life and adorable throwbacks to their younger days. Honestly, your heart might explode.

And the secret to keeping their relationship thriving in Hollywood? Well, Sarah has dropped some relationship gems. She told US Weekly: “It takes work to have a good friendship. You have to call and check in and dedicate that time, and most people aren’t willing to put that work in. So to have a successful relationship, whether it’s marriage, whether it’s friendship, whether it’s business, you have to put the time, if you want to see the results.”

She added: “To keep a relationship, you have to have stuff that’s private and things that are your own and between the two of you.”

So ladies, I think we’ve all learned a valuable lesson here. If you want to have a successful and long-lasting relationship there’s a few things you need to do: Keep your relationship private, find someone willing to cook for you (but is also a very good actor) and, most importantly, throw away your driver’s license.

Piece of cake.

Gay penguins form couples at London aquarium ahead of mating season – Metro Weekly

A London aquarium will have a particularly special attraction for visitors when it reopens next week: two same-sex penguin couples.

Sea Life London Aquarium announced that four female penguins have formed two same-sex couples — Marmalade and Chickpea, and Marama and Rocky — ahead of the birds’ annual mating season.

According to BBC News, the penguins gift a pebble to a potential mate, which then forms part of their nest for eggs.

The aquarium said that same-sex pairings are common in penguins, with couples adopting eggs that have been abandoned by other birds.

“Without a doubt, our Gentoo penguins are one of our most loved creatures and we’re so pleased that we’re able to reopen our doors in time for guests to be able to witness their amazing courtship rituals,” Sea Life manager Catherine Pritchard said.

“Gentoo penguins are the ultimate romantics, and their dating techniques are truly unique — so much so that as humans, we could certainly learn a thing or two from their passion and commitment to finding a mate.

“As well as our male-female penguin couples, this breeding season we also have two female same-sex couples who are also going through their nesting rituals.”

In 2019, Sea Life London announced that Marama and Rocky would be raising their adopted hatchling “genderless,” something that is not unusual, because penguins often don’t show any signs of gender-specific behavior until they reach adulthood, according to Sea Life.

Last year, two female penguins at Oceanogràfic València in Spain celebrated the birth of a new chick that hatched from an egg they adopted and incubated together.

Lesbian couple Electra and Viola started building a nest together, which led zookeepers to provide them with an egg from another couple. They eventually welcomed a chick together on August 17.

Even though homosexuality is common in penguins, same-sex penguin couples have earned headlines in recent years. One pair of gay African penguins at the Netherlands’ DierenPark Amersfoort zoo gained notoriety in 2019 after grabbing another couple’s egg and trying to hatch it themselves.

Joey from “Friends” was gay & closeted in joke cut from season 4 finale – LGBTQ Nation

A joke about Joey Tribbiani being gay was cut from an episode of Friends, an early version of the script revealed.

The magazine Grazia U.K. reported that a draft script for the season four finale, “The One With Ross’s Wedding,” had a joke in it where Phoebe said that Joey is gay. The draft was published as part of a book on the series.

Related: Was Chandler from “Friends” meant to be gay? It seems he almost was.

In the episode, four of the six friends went to London for Ross’s wedding with Emily. Phoebe stayed behind because she was pregnant and Rachel stayed to help her… and because she didn’t want to attend ex-boyfriend Ross’s wedding.

Talking with Phoebe in New York City, she eventually realizes that she’s still in love with Ross.

“Oh my god. I still love him, don’t I?” Rachel says.

“Oh, sweetheart, you didn’t know?” Phoebe responds in the draft script.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Rachel asks.

“We thought you knew. It’s so obvious. Or, like, you know, ‘Monica likes things clean,’” Phoebe quips. In the aired version of the episode, that’s where the scene ends.

But in the draft script, she adds another joke: “Or ‘Hey, Joey, you’re gay.’”

That joke was cut and some additional dialogue was added before the line about Monica liking things clean for the final version of the episode that aired.

Friends has faced criticism in recent years due to the show’s negative portrayal of LGBTQ people, including the dehumanizing way Chandler’s transgender parent was treated, the immature lesbian jokes Ross’s ex-wife Carol was the butt of, and the constant fear male characters in the show lived in of being thought of as gay, causing them to fear and laugh at boys and men who dance, take care of children, or play with dolls (gay, gay, and so gay that it’s OK to be mean to your own child over).

What’s unusual about Phoebe’s cut joke is that it was usually Ross and Chandler who were suspected of being gay, not womanizing Joey. And perhaps that’s why the joke didn’t make the final edit: it’s possible that Joey’s entire character was a carefully constructed facade for a closeted gay man, but that’s a long, arduous path for a sitcom to go down just for a rather un-funny zinger that isn’t even needed because it immediately followed one that made the same point.
