Zack Snyder Says Warner Bros. Passed on His 300 Sequel That Became a ‘Beautiful’ Gay ‘Love Story’ – Yahoo Entertainment

Oh, what the next installment in the 300 series could have been.

Zack Snyder (who co-wrote and directed 2006’s 300, as well as co-wrote and produced its 2014 sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire) claimed in a recent interview on with The Playlist’s The Fourth Wall podcast that Warner Bros. tasked him with writing the script to “what was essentially going to be the final chapter in 300.”

But as Snyder, 55, said of writing the screenplay during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, “I just couldn’t really get my teeth into it” — and instead, he came up with something the studio wasn’t on board with, according to the Army of the Dead director.

“When I sat down to write it, I actually wrote a different movie,” he said. “I was writing this thing about Alexander the Great, and it just turned into a movie about the relationship between Hephaestion and Alexander. It turned out to be a love story.”

While the idea “really didn’t fit in as the third movie” within the 300 series, Snyder was excited to bring it to the table anyway.

“There was that concept, and it came out really great. It’s called Blood and Ashes, and it’s a beautiful love story, really, with warfare,” he said. “I would love to do it, [WB] said no … you know, they’re not huge fans of mine. It is what it is.”

Warner Bros. didn’t immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Snyder has been outspoken about representation in film, having recently shown support for J.J. Abrams‘ upcoming DC movie, which is rumored to center on a Black Superman.

During a press conference to promote his Netflix movie Army of the Dead, Snyder told RadioTimes and other outlets that he is keen to see how Abrams, 54, executes the Superman reboot, calling the reported move to cast a Black actor as the famed superhero “long overdue.”

“My feeling is that I love J.J. [Abrams], I love what he’s done in the past,” Snyder said. “I’m interested to see what happens. It’s a bold and cool and probably long overdue move.”

He added, “But I love Henry [Cavill] as Superman, of course, I do. He’s my superman.”

Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates are set to work on the Superman reboot, with Abrams producing and Coates, 45, writing the screenplay.

“I’m not really involved in any of the decision-making at Warner Bros. in any way, so I guess for me it’s just wait and see what they do with this and how it manifests itself. But on the surface, it seems interesting,” Snyder concluded.

Our Town: The 6,000-year battle of the sexes – Opinions – The Island Now

Is there really that much difference between men and women?

In the film version of”My Fair Lady” Rex Harrison sings plaintively “Why can’t a woman be more like a man” expressing the confusion that exists between the sexes. This Oscar winning masterpiece has been referred to as the “perfect musical” based upon the story by Bernard Shaw, the music by Lerner and Loewe and the cast, which included Audrey Hepburn, who plays Elisa Doolittle. Throughout the play, Eliza works hard to obtain some respect and dignity while Rex Harrison, as Professor Henry Higgins, treats her with condescension. This Broadway smash has been revived many times as it attempts to understand the differences between the sexes and the struggle to find love. The last revival was in 2018 and this time around Elisa walked out on Higgins in search of her own career and this ending fell flat, based upon the audience reaction.
The differences between the sexes are not only seen in plays but in real life as well. As a sport psychologist I would say that men are drawn to sports more than women. Men are often content to spend the weekend watching football, baseball, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis depending on the season. If not that, then they are on the links or on the court competing to win.

If you look deeply enough, you can see male confusion, jealousy and fear around every corner in sports. If Freud were alive. he would look at football and remark, “Vas is des I see? A big fat man squatting down and then passing the ball between the legs into zee arms of zee other man? Des football is it not reminiscent of a baby and of childbirth?” Freud would tell you these are symbols of childbirth and the male imitating the female for some reason.

Or if soccer is your game, watch as 10 men carefully guard penetration into their end zone. Freud may say, “Why do des 10 men protect their end zone so well? Are des man afraid of penetration and of thus becoming girls? And vie do des winners hold the winning trophy in the air and kiss it. Do they think of it as their little newborn baby?”
There is clearly an odd intermingling of values and jealousies that are hidden at every turn here. Men seem to be stuck in the competitive mode and are apt to boost and posture while women are stuck in the cooperation mode with sweet smiles and a need to comply.

The Me-too Movement has revealed some basic issues here and feminists have long talked about the fact that women are marginalized in every way possible. What exactly is the source of this conflict between the sexes?
The genesis of sexism is thousands of years old. Man has marginalized, objectified, minimized, infantilized suppressed, depressed and idealized woman since the Bronze Age way back in 4,000 BC. When men were able to create weapons and tools, they conquered nature, but their fear of Mother Nature remained and was projected onto females. And when you fear something, you want to keep it contained. At least this is the feminist reasoning and I see no reason to at all to dispute this interesting point that remains in place 6,000 years later.

This has been called the 6,000-year-old battle of the sexes and as in all battles, it proves to be a waste of precious resources. And Sun Tzu widely counseled in “The Art of War” the best strategy of all is to avoid war if you can.

And it may be that the LGTB trend that we now see is the culture’s effort to right this imbalance. As an example, coaching would be vastly improved if more professional teams started hiring women as head coaches. They tend to be more humane, empowering, supportive and interested in the players’ development rather than the win-loss record. And when you respect and empower your players and treat them as humans, they will win for you far more.

If that trend leads us into better relations between the sexes, then bravo to the LGBT movement. It seems that when women are marginalized and minimized and treated as anything but equals, it leads to anger, resentment, exhaustion and depression on all sides. Men wind up as overworked dominating, disappointed chest thumpers and women wind up as sweet-smiling. teeth-clenching beauties who feel alone, trapped and undervalued as humans.

The proof that things seem to be changing is seen in politics where we have a female vice president. As the song goes “The times they are a changing.” I would say it’s about time.

Robert De Niro details freak on set accident leg injury: ‘The pain was excruciating’ – Yardbarker

Robert De Niro specified that he suffered “a torn quad somehow” while on location in Oklahoma to film the Martin Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, but the 77-year-old seems in good spirits.

“I tore my quad somehow,” De Niro told IndieWire. “It’s just a simple stepping over something, and I just went down. The pain was excruciating, and now I have to get it fixed. But it happens, especially when you get older, you have to be prepared for unexpected things. But it’s manageable.”

De Niro added, in relation to if his character William Hale will feel repercussions from the injury: “What I’m doing with Scorsese in Killers of the Flower Moon, I’m pretty much a sedentary character in a way. I don’t move around a lot, thank God. So we’ll manage. I just have to get the procedure done and keep it straight in a certain position and let it heal.”

Killers of the Flower Moon is the film adaptation of David Grann’s 2017 book by the same name. Per IMDb, the story retraces Osage tribe members getting “murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.”

The historical crime drama will also star Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, and more.

Katherine Schwarzenegger pinpoints when she knew she loved Chris Pratt – Yardbarker

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger married in June 2019, and neither were surprised that their whirlwind romance took them to the altar—though The Terminator was a little surprised at first.

“We talk about that a lot because I’m pretty sure we both knew right away that this is where our relationship was headed,” Schwarzenegger said on The Drew Barrymore Show. “We clicked very quickly, and so, he’s the best. I’m so, so grateful. And it’s so beautiful to be able to watch him, you know, step into this new role of being a girl dad.

“He’s the best husband and best dad, and I feel so grateful every single day for him.”

Iran must investigate brutal ‘honour killing’ of young gay man, human rights group says – Yahoo Eurosport UK

Human rights group Amnesty International has called for a full investigation into the brutal “honour killing” of young gay man in Iran.

This month, Alireza Fazeli Monfared, 20, who identified as non-binary gay man, was killed and beheaded by his own family in Iran, when they discovered the military had exempted him from service because of “sexual depravities”.

Amnesty International is now calling for a full investigation into his murder, fearing that the perpetrators will go unpunished as the country criminalises same-sex sexual activity and gender non-conformity.

A full investigation, the human rights group said, would include authorities determining “whether the crime was motivated by hostility and prejudice on the grounds of his gender identity and sexual orientation”.

Although investigators in Iran have confirmed the death of the gay man, no arrests have yet been made.

Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa deputy director, said in a statement: “Alireza Fazeli Monfared’s brutal murder exposes the deadly consequences of state-fuelled homophobia and is a tragic reminder of the urgent need to repeal laws that criminalise consensual same-sex relations and gender non-conformity.

“These laws foster a permissive climate for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes and legitimise violence, including deadly attacks against people on the grounds of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

“The Iranian authorities’ brazen disregard for the lives and safety of LGBT+ people and the prevailing climate of impunity for such crimes, raise the alarm that his murder could go unpunished.

“We urge the Iranian authorities to conduct a prompt, independent, impartial and effective investigation into Alireza Fazeli Monfared’s murder and take urgent action to protect LGBT+ people from discrimination, harassment, assaults and other abuses.”

Alongside calls for a full investigation into Monfared’s murder, Amnesty International has published a briefing outlining how LGBT+ people in Iran live in constant fear of persecution and violence, to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on 17 May.

Iran criminalises same-sex relations, which are punished by flogging and the death penalty. Gender expression that does not abide by “norms” in the country is also banned.

Watch: Sacha Baron Cohen interrupted by Ali G & Borat while accepting Comedic Genius Award – Yardbarker

Sacha Baron Cohen showcased the comedic genius that earned him the Comedic Genius Award at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night.

The 49-year-old’s acceptance speech began with him fully in character as Borat, who was then interrupted by Cohen’s Ali G character. Finally, Cohen arrived as himself. He began his actual speech, and just when it seemed like all the hijinks were over, Bruno Gehard popped in.

All in all, Cohen used the speech to address the inappropriate and insensitive nature of his past satirical characters. “Before anyone else does it, I am officially canceling myself,” he said. “I was actually really looking forward to this after losing at the Oscars.”

Watchdog Says Killing Of Young Gay Man In Iran Highlights Need To Protect LGBT Rights – Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty

Amnesty International has marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex-phobia, and Transphobia by renewing its calls on Iran to repeal laws criminalizing consensual same-sex relations.

The London-based human rights watchdog said in an analysis published on May 17 that the recent “horrifying” killing of a 20-year-old gay man in Iran “has shed new light on how the criminalization of consensual same-sex sexual conduct and gender nonconformity perpetuates systemic violence and discrimination” against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT).

The killing also “highlights the urgent need for the Iranian authorities to enact and implement laws to protect the human rights” of LGBT people from discrimination, harassment, assaults, and other abuses from state and nonstate actors. it said.

Alireza Fazeli Monfared was reportedly killed on May 4 by his half-brother and cousins who dumped his body under a tree near Ahvaz the capital of the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

Authorities said that Fazeli Monfared’s throat was slit and announced an investigation, but no suspect has been arrested so far.

Amnesty International urged the authorities to “promptly conduct an independent, impartial and effective criminal investigation into the murder” and “bring those responsible to account in fair trials and without recourse to the death penalty.”

“Investigations must examine whether the crime was motivated by hostility and prejudice on the grounds of his gender identity and sexual orientation.”

Amnesty quoted individuals who had known Fazeli Monfared as saying he had faced “years of homophobic and transphobic harassment and death threats by several male relatives.”

The sources said he had never reported such incidents to the police “out of a fear of facing violence and prosecution at the hands of the authorities.”

Iranian laws criminalize consensual same-sex relations, including through the application of the death penalty, and flogging, and ban clothing, hairstyles, and other forms of gender expression that do not conform to strict gender “norms” enforced by the establishment, according to Amnesty International.

“These laws foster a permissive climate for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes and legitimize violent, including deadly, attacks against people on the grounds of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity,” Diana Eltahawy, deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa at the group, said in a statement.

“The Iranian authorities’ brazen disregard for the lives and safety of LGBT people and the prevailing climate of impunity for such crimes raise the alarm that his murder could go unpunished.”

Gay boy sends neighbor heartbreaking letter begging them to save him from abusive homophobic dad – LGBTQ Nation

A gay Brazilian teen has been rescued after he sent his neighbor a handwritten letter begging for help. The heartbreaking note said his homophobic father was abusing him.

When the concerned neighbor investigated, he heard the man screaming at the boy and threatening to kill him. The neighbor recorded the man and turned the video recording over to the police.

“Have you ever felt like you’re not good for anyone? I’m feeling it. It hurts a lot here,” the 14-year-old boy wrote according to our sister site, Queerty. “Please, help me.”

“We hear him screaming, asking for help,” one of the teen’s neighbors told local media. “It is difficult for people who are mothers to see a situation like this.”

The man can be heard screaming at his son in the recording, yelling, “I’m tired of telling you. Didn’t I already tell you to change? You have to change! Do you know why? Because if you don’t change, I will kill you! I will blow you up!”

The man told police that he accepts his son’s sexuality, but was upset that he found the teen looking at pornography on his phone.

“He said that he does not care, that he accepts and that he had already spoken with the adolescent, but he caught him accessing pornographic videos on his cell phone and did not control his anger,” a police spokesperson said.

The bruised teen’s mother, however, said dad’s story wasn’t true. She told police that the father had become irate after finding out his son is gay.

The teen was removed from the home as the investigation continues.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star and co-creator Rob McElhenney expressed his gratitude for having two moms after they appeared in a GLAAD video for Mother’s Day, where they reflected on their 37-year relationship.

While Helena knew she had found the person she wanted to spend her life with, it came with its fair share of hardships. As Mary Taylor states in the video, the first couple of years were very tough for them, but they managed to pull through and make everything work out for the better.

McElhenney, who plays Mac in the series, even used his moms as inspiration to make his character in the series come out as gay.

Pinknews wrote that Mac appears to come out in the first part of “The Gang Goes to Hell,” a two-part finale. While on a Christian cruise, Mac realizes a gay couple are on board, and tries to “convert” them to heterosexuality. However, as he is actually gay himself, the couple turned the tables on Mac.

On May 6, just three days before Mother’s Day, McElhenney posted the GLAAD video on Twitter, writing, “No family looks exactly the same. So proud to call both of these ladies “Mom”. @mommcelhenney @marytaylor2.”

McElhenney is no stranger to the LGBT community, he told Deadline in an interview, “I was partly raised by two women, and I have two brothers who are gay, so I have always been part of the gay community.”

Biden Marks L.G.B.T.Q. Holiday Against Bigotry – The New York Times

President Biden marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on Monday by calling on dozens of countries — and half of the states in the union — to strengthen anti-discrimination protections for the L.G.B.T.Q. community.

“Both Covid-19 and rising authoritarianism around the world continue to widen economic, social and safety gaps for LGBTQI+ people — and an epidemic of violence still rages, with a particular impact on the transgender community,” Mr. Biden said in a statement commemorating the day, which takes place on the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s move in 1990 to declassify “homosexuality” as a mental disorder.

“Around the world, some 70 countries still criminalize same-sex relationships,” he said. “And here at home, LGBTQI+ Americans still lack basic protection in 25 states, and they continue to face discrimination in housing, education and public services.”

The number cited by Mr. Biden refers to states that do not offer basic safeguards against discrimination, according to a report by the Movement Advancement Project, a nonpartisan think tank that analyzes local and state L.G.B.T.Q. laws.

Human rights groups fear that many states are moving in the other direction, driven by the conservative culture-war politics of many Republicans allied with former President Donald J. Trump. Recently, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee have imposed restrictions on transgender athletes in school sports, and Arkansas banned gender-affirming treatment for transgender minors.

In the past year, predominantly Republican state legislators have introduced more than 250 bills that sought to restrict activities or roll back protections, according to Human Rights Watch, an L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy group.

Mr. Trump also marked the holiday when he was in office, but he sent mixed messages as president.

In 2019, he delivered a speech calling on nations around the world “to stop criminalizing homosexuality,” and expressed solidarity with “L.G.B.T.Q. people who live in countries that punish, jail or execute individuals based upon sexual orientation.”

But he did little to back up those words with action. Some of the world leaders he viewed as most friendly to him, including President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil — who once said he would rather have a dead son than a gay one — have been antagonistic to L.G.B.T.Q. rights.

Mr. Trump also courted religious conservatives, tried to ban transgender people from serving in the military, opposed bipartisan anti-discrimination legislation, and rolled back Obama-era initiatives to leverage federal civil rights laws to protect L.G.B.T.Q. people.

My lover won’t admit she’s gay and wants me to be her dirty little secret… – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: MY lover won’t admit she is gay but when she’s drunk, she is all over me.

I’m a woman of 37 and she is 38. We met while working in a school where she is a teacher and I’m a teaching assistant.

We became friends and then lovers. I’ve been openly gay since my teens, but I’ve always been her guilty secret.

My team and I are working safely from home but we are here to help you as always.

After six months she ended our relationship, saying she had no time to be with anyone.

But she contacted me a week later and invited me to her home. As soon as I walked in, we kissed and ended up having sex.

The next night she called me, although this time she was drunk. We got together again and ended up having sex.

She told me she loved me but said I deserved better and should be with someone else.

But the next day she switched, insisting she had no feelings for me whatsoever and she only wanted friendship.

She’s very manipulative. I know she plays games with my feelings and it’s getting me down.

DEIDRE SAYS:  You can’t make her come out but if you want to develop this relationship, explain that you won’t wait around for ever.

Give yourself a time limit for her to commit to you.

If she can’t be open, explain that casual relationships aren’t your style and you’re going to find somebody who takes a relationship with you seriously.

From LGBT Activists’ Home Becoming a Landmark to Ohio Allowing Birth Certificate Changes, This Week in Across the Country – SouthFloridaGayNews.com

This week read about Del Martin’s and Phyllis Lyon’s home in California becoming a landmark, and Ohio accepting a ruling to allow transgender individuals to update their birth certificates to match their gender identity.

LGBT Activists’ Home to be Made Landmark

The home of a lesbian couple that pioneered LGBT rights in California will soon become a local landmark, following a unanimous vote from the San Francisco Board of Directors.

In 1955, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon moved into the one-bedroom house, where they founded the Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian rights organization in the United States. For years, the couple used the home to hold meetings, conduct organizational business, and publish The Ladder, the first nationally distributed lesbian publication in the U.S.

Executive director of the GLBT Historical Society Terry Beswick told the Associated Press, “The Daughters of Bilitis didn’t have an office space, so 651 [Duncan St.] was really ground zero for the lesbian rights movement at the time. It was a place where people could be safe and reveal their sexuality.”

Lyon and Martin, both deceased, were among the first couples to legally marry in California, and lived in the house together for over 50 years. The board will hold a second, ceremonial vote before it reaches Mayor London Breed’s desk for approval.

Ohio to Allow Birth Certificate Changes

The Ohio Department of Health has officially accepted a December 2020 court ruling that the state must accept requests from transgender individuals who want to update their birth certificate to reflect their gender identity.

Four transgender plaintiffs, represented by the ACLU of Ohio, faced discrimination in trying to update their birth certificates, even though the state allows changes to be made to driver’s licenses and other government documents. The state allowed transgender residents to make changes to the document until 2016, when health officials changed the policy.

U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson wrote in his ruling that “this policy resembles the sort of discrimination-based legislation struck down under the equal protection clause in Romer v. Evans as nothing more than a policy ‘born of animosity toward the class of person affected’ that has ‘no rational relation to a legitimate government purpose.’”

The Ohio Department of Health expects to have a clear process for changing the sex marker on the certificate by June 1, leaving Tennessee as the last state in the union to not offer the document change.

Sherlock Holmes x 3! Are Any Of Them LGBT? – Instinct Magazine

It is the age old question…Is he gay or European?  In the case of beloved fictional character Sherlock Holmes the answer right now might just be – wait for it – both! Rumors are swirling that in two upcoming high-profile Sherlock Holmes adaptations the much discussed, often questioned sexuality of the British detective will be addressed.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson  – Warner Bros

The rumors surrounding one project keep getting louder and louder as the release date approaches. The producers of the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes 3” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will reportedly confirm that Holmes and Watson are gay. Downey Jr., in fact, has fed the rumor mill for years, with sound bites like this one about the relationship between Holmes and Watson,

“{they are} two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed…Guy {Ritchie} wanted to make this about the relationship between Watson and Holmes. They’re both mean and complicated.”

in 2009, Downey Jr. and David Letterman had a very frank conversation where Letterman alluded to the fact stating, “Now, from what I recall, there was always the suggestion that there was a different level of relationship between Sherlock and Dr. Watson.” Downey Jr., then responded that Watson’s wife could be a beard!

A quick internet search of Holmes’ sexuality nets words like “asexual” and “married to his work” and “not interested in romantic relationships.” The adaptation fueling the most discussion of Holmes’ sexuality, much to the dismay of the creators and producers, is BBC’s Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Benedict Cumberbatch (left) as Sherlock in BBC series “Sherlock.” photo courtesy of BBC.

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat had this to say on the topic,

“It’s a funny thing when a character for over 100 years has been saying, ‘I don’t do that at all,’” “[Sherlock]’s not interested in [sex]. He’s willfully staying away from that to keep his brain pure — a Victorian belief, that. But everyone wants to believe he’s gay. He’s not gay. He’s not straight.”

Cumberbatch, who won an Emmy in 2014 for his performance, has said this about the character,

He’s asexual. He doesn’t want any, and it’s very purposeful on his part. I think he’s been burnt in the past. I think he also realizes he can’t beat female intuition; he can’t. So to embroil himself where he might be enslaved through adoration or sexual desire or any kind of power or chemistry to do with love is too big a risk for him.”

Finally, seems Netflix executives are thinking of taking some major liberties and planning on a bisexual Sherlock Holmes in the sequel to their blockbuster prequel movie, “Enola Holmes.”

“Enola Holmes,” stars Millie Bobby Brown as the title character, Sherlock Holmes’ little sister. The movie focuses on Enola as she starts an investigation into their mother, with Henry Cavill playing Sherlock as he too begins his detective career.

The first “Enola Holmes” was able to sidestep any talk of Holmes’ sexuality as Sherlock was a supporting character AND the prequel is set years before he meets Watson. The bromance between Holmes and Watson fuels much of the “are they or aren’t they” talk. The relationship between Holmes and Watson is a central storyline on the BBC series, generating fan fiction and endless debates about the sexuality of the two characters.

The only road block for Netflix might be a woman named Andrea Plunket, who claims to have the publishing rights to the character. Those publishing rights are much disputed though.

While she has been told in court that she does not, she still persists in her claims and has sold the rights to publishing houses before. While Netflix may not be too concerned about this as they are a major company, the possibility of Plunket suing them for establishing Sherlock’s sexuality is there. She threatened to make problems for the Guy Ritchie series for the similiar reasons.

Got all that? Three different adaptations, three different takes on the character and three different actors! Your turn, Instincters…what do you think? Is Sherlock gay? bisexual? asexual? Sound off in the comment section below, and while you are doing that check out the trailer for “Sherlock Holmes 3.” The movie is scheduled to open December 20, 2021, after the original release date was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
