Christian Realtor Dropping License Over Personal Beliefs on LGBT Issues – Faithwire

Minnesota-based realtor Matt Moore, who is a Christian, said Friday he is allowing his real estate license to expire due to his beliefs on LGBT issues.

“My current broker will not allow me to continue working under her … if I continue to speak publicly about LGBTQ+ issues,” he told Faithwire.

Moore first announced the development Friday morning, asking his Twitter followers to pray for him and his wife, Tabitha Piper Moore.

He went on to write he and Tabitha have decided to “move on” from real estate and reiterated they “aren’t angry” about this development.

“I’m not looking to bear the Christian political torch,” Moore added later. “I have important things — Gospel things — to focus on. I think I’ve served my role in this by pleading [and] sharing. Perhaps God has called one of you to take up the political torch. But I think he’s called me to move on.”

As it stands right now, his real estate license will sunset July 1.

Moore, who has been open about his own struggle with same-sex attraction and indicated he does not speak to his personally held beliefs while working with clients, first addressed this issue in early December 2020, when he published an open letter to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which had recently updated the language in its code of ethics in a way he argued could spark “discrimination against Christian realtors.”

In November, the board of directors for the NAR adopted new wording for Standard of Practice 10-5 as part of Article 10 of the organization’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

The updated code states realtors “must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”

It also revised Policy Statement 29 to state realtors “shall be subject to disciplinary action under the Code of Ethics with respect to all of their activities” (emphasis added).

Previously, the code qualified that realtors would be “subject to disciplinary action under the Code of Ethics only with respect to real estate-related activities and transactions involving the realtor” (emphasis added).

NAR President Vince Malta said at the time the changes were made as part of the association’s efforts toward “combatting and overcoming bigotry and injustice,” a cause Moore championed.

However, the Christian realtor explained, he’s concerned the updated language in the NAR’s code of ethics will do more harm than good.

“As public awareness of the fact that realtors can be reported for things said and done outside of real estate increases,” Moore wrote, “realtors who express a historic Christian view on homosexual and transsexual behavior could become regular targets for undeserved allegations of hate speech.”

Moore’s concern, he noted, is founded in the fact there is no clearly understood definition for so-called “hate speech” in the U.S. and, as such, “it is common for a mere articulation of Christian beliefs concerning homosexuality and transgenderism to be labeled as hate speech.”

“When we say that God desires LGBTQ+ people to turn to Jesus in faith and away from sexual (and all!) sin, we are often accused of doing harm to LGBTQ+ persons,” Moore wrote. “But this is not harmful. This is not hate speech. This is an opinion.”

“And there are countless opinions in this country about various moral issues,” he continued. “A healthy society is one in which many opinions about many things can be tolerated. An unhealthy society is one in which people seek to ‘cancel’ or silence those who hold different opinions. I’m afraid NAR’s new rules, if interpreted and enforced in the way I worry they might be, could play a part in moving our society further away from health rather than toward it.”

Moore also raised the fact that the hearing panel — made up not of lawyers or psychologists, but other realtors — is charged with determining the motivations of the individual accused of uttering “hate speech.” He argued it is “very difficult to prove intent,” whether good or bad.

“Under NAR’s new rules,” Moore asked, “will it really be possible for a Christian realtor — or any realtor whose religious beliefs consider homosexual and transsexual behavior to be unnatural — to speak publicly of their views without subjecting themselves to undeserved allegations of hate speech and potentially career-ending discipline?”

He wrote in December he was concerned the NAR’s change in policy could mean he “may one day no longer be able to work as a real estate agent.”

Moore explained to Faithwire there are Christian-owned brokerages in the Twin Cities area, but some of them would be “uneasy about agents speaking publicly about biblical views on sexuality and gender, which is something I do regularly because it’s part of my history and ministry.”

“If a broker did decide to carry my license, they would also be hit by any future arrows that are shot my way,” he said. “They would be putting their own businesses, NAR membership (which is more vital than you might think), and potentially even their licenses at risk.”

Indiana School Board Orders LGBT Pride Flags Removed from High School Classrooms – Newsweek

An Indiana school board has caused controversy this week with their decision to order three Pendleton Heights High School teachers to remove rainbow flags from their classrooms.

District officials have said that rainbow LGBT Pride flags which they ordered be removed from the Spanish, French, and art classrooms on Tuesday, violated the school’s no “political paraphernalia” policy.

“The issue with displaying the flag in a school is a double-edged sword. If an LGBTQ+ flag is allowed to be displayed, then any other group would have the same ability. That could include such flags as supporting white supremacy, which is in direct conflict with LGBTQ+. I hope we can model equality and support through our actions,” South Madison Board of Trustees President Bill Hutton said in an email sent to students, parents, and staff accompanying the removal of the flags.

This emailed statement did not do much to assuage upset students’ concerns, however, as it did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the differing concepts of sexuality vs. racial supremacy.

“One is about inclusiveness and the other is about hate and exclusion, and I don’t think that’s the same thing at all,” said Tai Willis, a Pendleton Heights sophomore who does not agree that the rainbow flags should be classified as political.

“Why would you compare a racist flag?” Wills told the Associated Press. “Those two have nothing to do with each other.”

“South Madison School Corporation welcomes and celebrates all its students and does not tolerate harassment or discrimination based on any protected class. We pride ourselves on creating an environment that is welcoming to all. Teachers are legally obligated to maintain viewpoint neutrality during their official duties to ensure all students can focus on learning and we can maintain educational activities and school operations,” Pendleton Heights Principal Connie Rickert said in an email to Newsweek. “Our counselors are trained to respond to any student who desires support.”

Willis said that the reality of Pendleton Heights’ attitude toward LGBT students is not so supportive. When, last year, she started a Gay-Straight Alliance, Willis was told her club would not be allowed to post fliers or raise money like the other clubs were.

“Their only excuse was, ‘It’s a sensitive topic,'” Willis said. “It didn’t really feel like we were a club because we weren’t allowed to do much.”

Bryce Axel-Adams, a junior at Pendleton Heights started an online petition, “Allow Pride Flag to be flown in classrooms in Pendleton,” to take to school board members. Axel-Adams posted an update to his petition:

“I have received updated information from Admin, they have changed their argument from the flag being political speech to taking it down to avoid a discrimination lawsuit. Their biggest fear is that someone will file a discrimination lawsuit because they want the opposite of the pride flag to be flown. I understand where the Admin and their lawyers are coming from, but sometimes people have to take risks to protect their students.”

As of Friday afternoon, his petition had over 3,800 signatures.

Newsweek reached out to the South Madison Board of Trustees and will update this story with any response.

Update (5/21/2021, 10:45 p.m.): This article has been updated to include a statement from Pendleton Heights Principal Connie Rickert.

#PulseUhondoMtaani: I’m Gay- Makena Njeri Confirms, Cate Waruguru’s hubby announces divorce from wife of 10 years & other stories – Pulse Live Kenya

So, let’s get to the business of the day;

I’m Gay – Njeri Makena finally confirms on international media platform

Media personality Njeri Makena has come out as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community.

In a video posted by international media platform, TedX on behalf of TedX Parklands, Makena disclosed that it had taken years for her to accept and admit the fact to herself.

“I remember for the first time in my life after very many years, I looked at the mirror and said to myself ‘I am gay, I am unique and this is my truth’,” she said.

“I remember that cold morning of July 2019 when I woke up and looked at my phone. I had over 1,000 messages and over 500 missed calls. My blood went cold. I knew something was wrong,” she said.

Family and friends who already knew about her orientation deserted her because they would be judged for associating with her, she relayed.

For the three months that followed, she was constantly battling depression with few people to turn to.

Ms Makena narrated that in her career as an actor, she had wanted to take up roles that would normally be reserved for men but often faced criticism.

The former Tahidi High star added that as a gay woman living in Kenya, she has received a lot of hateful comments online because of the choice to be bold and outspoken about her identity.

“I believe that gender identity is one’s personal experience and perception of self,” she explained.

After leaving BBC, Makena is now focused on building her organization Bold Network Africa where she is the CEO and founder.

Cate Waruguru’s husband announces divorce from wife of 10 years

Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru’s husband, Peter Waweru, has revealed intimate details about his divorce from first wife of 10 years, Zipporah Njoki.

Speaking in a recent interview, Waweru disclosed that some of the irreconcilable differences between them involved alcohol.

According to him, the couple has tried to resolve their problems through their parents but the interventions bore no fruit.

On her part, Njoki insisted that the couple broke up after the businessman abandoned her to pursue Cate as his second wife.

Njoki added that Waweru gave her an ultimatum to accept his second wife or forfeit their union and she declined.

The drama between the three played out recently when Waweru’s first wife claimed that she was assaulted by the Laikipia Woman Rep.

Njoki told the police that Peter and Cate visited their matrimonial home when the scuffle ensued but the businessman argued that he had been accompanied by his sister and not the politician.

Jacqueline Mengi Loses Control of her Billionaire Hubby Reginald Mengi’s Business Empire

Jacqueline Ntuyabaliwe Mengi has lost control of a section of her Husband Reginald Mengi’s Business empire after Tanzania’s High court rejected a Will that was allegedly written by the late Billionaire.

On May 18, 2021 Judge Yose Mlyambina declared the alleged Will invalid on grounds that it doesn’t meet the legal requirements to be regarded as a valid Will.

The ruling also raised questions on the late Mengi’s mental health, an act that prompted the former miss Tanzania to speak out and clear the air.

The one-time singer, wondered how a person who authored a book “I Can, I Must, I Will” was mentally unsound when he was launching it.

I bet those who have read the I CAN I MUST I WILL , will be very surprised to hear that someone out there has declared the author of the book @regmengi to have been mentally unsound when he wrote and launched that book. This world will never cease to amaze me!” wrote Jacqueline Mengi.

Ms Mengi popularly known as K-Lynn, went to an extent of producing her late hubby’s medical report that proves he was of sound mind.

“Enough is enough. Dr Reginald Mengi medical report attached as evidence .The truth for those interested in the truth. My husband spent his entire life as a respected, intelligent, kind and a helping hand for thousands of Tanzanians. He wasn’t insane!

You can say whatever you want and take everything but for this i will defend him to my deathbed so make it fast. Dr Kaushik Ranchod of South Africa and Dr Anthony Rudd of Uk and Dr Valentino who gave a testimony know the truth and someone should get the truth!” shared Ms Mengi.

The Will in question had allocated the deceased’s estate to his spouse (Jacqueline Mengi) and twin children.

A lawsuit filed by four people (Benson Benjamin Mengi, William Onesmo Mushi, Zoebu Hassuji and Sylvia Novatus Mushi) had requested the court to make them administrators of the said Estates.

However, the Judge made the ruling of declaring the will invalid on grounds that it was not sealed and the existing signature was different from the usual signature of the late Reginald Mengi.

The Judge also said that the signing was not witnessed by any of the deceased’s relative or wife.

Alikiba takes a swipe at Diamond over his bitter rant at Forbes Magazine

Tanzanian singer Ali Saleh Kiba popularly known as Alikiba took swipe at his longtime nemesis Diamond Platnumz following his bitter rant over the list of Richest Musicians in Africa.

In a tweet, King Kiba indirectly mocked Chibu Dangote, reminding him that those who get featured on Forbes Magazine never brag about their net worth, like he does.

Adding that, it was unnecessary for him to rant over the alleged Forbes List, yet he only needed to convince Tanzanians that he is rich.

Kiba Takes a Swipe

“Sadala nisikilize ,kati ya hao watu ambao wewe unajidanganya kuwa Ni wenzako , na kudanganya watu wenye ufupi wa akili .hakuna hata mmoja ametanga ana hela akaandikwa FB. haina haja yakulalamika sisi ukituambia kama unahela tunaamini inatosha ila wale wana akili ndefu (mediocre)” wrote Alikiba.

“FORBES: next time google me to know what am really worth of, before putting me on your Stupid Richest African Musicians List!!!” wrote Diamond Platnumz.

Progress Mixed in Cancer Prevention, Early Detection Measures – HealthDay News

FRIDAY, May 21, 2021 (HealthDay News) — Cancer prevention and early detection measures show mixed progress, according to a review published online May 19 in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Priti Bandi, Ph.D., from the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, and colleagues presented estimates of cancer risk factors and screening tests in 2018 and 2019 among U.S. adults, focusing on smoking cessation.

The researchers found that in 2019, cigarette smoking reached a historic low (14.2 percent), partly because 61.7 percent of all persons who had ever smoked had quit. Among lower-income, Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and uninsured or Medicaid-insured persons, the quit ratio was <45 percent; among lower-educated, lesbian, gay, or bisexual, recent immigrant persons, and in 12 of 17 Southern states, the quit ratio was <55 percent. In 2017 to 2018, obesity levels remained high (42.8 percent) and were disproportionately higher among Black and Hispanic women (56.9 and 43.7 percent, respectively). In adolescents aged 13 to 17 years, human papillomavirus vaccination remained underutilized; in 2019, more than 40 percent were not up-to-date. In 2018, cancer screening prevalence was suboptimal (66, 63.2, and 83.7 percent for colorectal cancer ≥50 years, breast cancer ≥45 years, and cervical cancer at 21 to 65 years, respectively), especially among uninsured adults (29.8 and 31.1 percent for colorectal and breast cancer, respectively).

“While historical gains in smoking cessation have led to steep declines in lung cancer mortality in the past decade, substantial progress can still be made by improving cessation outcomes among socially vulnerable groups,” Bandi said in a statement.

San Antonio Spurs await decisions by DeMar DeRozan, Gregg Popovich – San Antonio Express-News

In July 2018, DeMar DeRozan joined the Spurs against his will.

The All-Star guard wanted to remain in Toronto, the only NBA home he had known. Truth be told, the Spurs would have preferred that too.

DeRozan was the centerpiece of the return package in a trade the Spurs didn’t want to make, a swap that sent disgruntled superstar Kawhi Leonard to the Raptors.

In the three seasons since, it is fair to say the Spurs grew on DeRozan just as DeRozan grew on them.

“It’s definitely an honor to play for this organization,” DeRozan said after the Spurs’ season ended with a 100-96 loss at Memphis on Wednesday. “Everything they did for me and how they treated me, it was definitely A1.”

The conspiratorial-minded among Spurs fans might note DeRozan slipped into the past tense when talking about his San Antonio tenure.

What that linguistic shift means as DeRozan prepares to hit this summer’s free agency market is anybody’s guess.

The Spurs will be in position to re-sign the 32-year-old DeRozan this offseason if they desire.

But with the team at a rebuilding crossroads, the Spurs’ level of interest in bringing back DeRozan remains to be seen.

So too does DeRozan’s interest in returning to a team still in the early stages of a reconstruction project yet to produce a playoff berth.

What seems clear for now: When NBA free agency opens Aug. 2, DeRozan is prepared to listen to outside offers for the first time in his 12-year NBA career.

“I’ve never been in this situation before in my career, to be going completely in as a free agent,” said DeRozan, who made $27.7 million this season. “I have no clue (what to expect). It hasn’t been something I’ve thought about or that I can sit up here and say I’ve got options.”

As one of the few All-Star-caliber players expected to be available this summer, DeRozan almost certainly will have them.

Armed with about $60 million in salary cap room, the Spurs will have options as well.

The club will face a choice between using that space on outside free agents or re-signing their own, or saving it altogether to preserve future cap flexibility.

Rudy Gay, Patty Mills, Trey Lyles, Gorgui Dieng, Quinndary Weatherspoon and Keita Bates-Diop will become free agents as well.

Most notable on that list are the 34-year-old Gay and 32-year-old Mills, who at 10 seasons is the longest-tenured player on the Spurs’ roster.

“Obviously, I want them to come back,” center Jakob Poeltl said. “We have great vibes on this team. We have good chemistry. We made some big improvements.

“But the NBA’s a business, and it’s their decision.”

In the meantime, the biggest decision the Spurs will await this summer involves a man who did not score a point this season.

Gregg Popovich, the Spurs’ 72-year-old coach, has taken a season-by-season approach to his job for the past several years.

In typical fashion, Popovich has said nothing about the prospect of returning for a 26th season on the Spurs’ bench.

That decision might not come until after Popovich finishes coaching Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics in August.

If Popovich stays on as the longest-running coach in North American sports, the roster he leads likely will look different than the one that finished 33-39 this season and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

DeRozan led the Spurs in scoring at 21.6 points and logged a career-best 6.9 assists.

The Spurs don’t necessarily view him as a hindrance to their ongoing youth movement.

“DeMar has totally bought into trying to play a movement game on offense,” Popovich said. “He’s always been a good leader, and he’s improved his all-around game beyond just being able to score.”

DeRozan, too, said he enjoys his role as a mentor and elder statesman on a young roster.

He is not opposed to sticking around to help lead the Spurs’ rebuilding effort.

“I’m not just a teammate of these guys, I’m a fan of them,” DeRozan said. “When I lend a helping hand and see those guys be receptive to whatever I tell them and it works, it feels good to see.”

Still, DeRozan appears set to test the market in August.

This year’s free-agent class will include up to three 2021 All-Stars: Leonard, who now plays for the L.A. Clippers; Utah guard Mike Conley; and Phoenix guard Chris Paul. Leonard and Paul have player options.

DeRozan would be the next-most-attractive name on that list, and certain to draw suitors.

In the moments after the Spurs’ loss in Memphis, DeRozan was uninterested in looking too far beyond the plane ride home to San Antonio

“I’m still thinking about how we could have won, how we could have kept playing,” DeRozan said. “Having to go sit on the plane with those guys and try to keep them upbeat, that’s my focus right now.”

Whether that flight was DeRozan’s last on the Spurs’ team plane is a question that will be answered in the months to come.

“Stonewall” actor Jeremy Irvine eyed for role as gay superhero Green Lantern in HBO Max series – LGBTQ Nation

Jeremy Irvine, the actor who played the lead role in Roland Emmerich’s 2015 film Stonewall, is reportedly being considered for the role of Alan Scott in HBO Max’s upcoming Green Lantern series.

The character is one of the higher-profile gay superheroes in the DC Universe.

Emmerich’s movie was widely criticized for erasing the role of transgender people and “whitewashing” the Stonewall riots by casting a white man in the starring role instead of a person of color.

Scott was the first Green Lantern when the comic was introduced in the early 1940s. When the comic was rebooted in the 60s, Hal Jordan was the new Green Lantern and explained away by moving Scott to a parallel universe. Scott’s character was reimagined as a gay man for his return in 2012.

Finn Wittrock, who has starred in numerous seasons of American Horror Story including gay characters, will portray Jordan.

The show will span decades, starting with Scott in the 40s and adding in Jordan and other Lanterns in other episodes.

Greg Berlanti, the out producer behind several DC Comics television and movie properties, will be in charge of the show. He also co-wrote and co-produced the Green Lantern film that bombed at the box office in 2011.

Berlanti created CW’s “Arrowverse” of DC Comics shows, including Supergirl, the first show to feature a transgender superhero. Batwoman, who has her own show also produced by Berlanti, is a lesbian.

22 inspiring quotes from Harvey Milk, America’s first openly gay elected official who was later assassinated – indy100

Harvey Milk was a man of wit and courage. Starting as a humble camera shop owner, Milk’s charisma and activism for the gay community earned him a seat at the table on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1977.

This accomplishment made him the first openly gay man to hold a seat in office in California, and the first openly gay person to be officially elected in the United States.

In November 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were shot at San Francisco City Hall by former board member Dan White. White was upset that Moscone decided not to reappoint him on the Board of Supervisors, although White had just resigned from the position.

White also had some resentment that Milk lobbied against his reappointment.

Milk continues to have a significant influence and legacy on the nation’s LGBTQ+ rights movement and was even the subject of a 2008 movie starring Sean Penn about his life as the iconic official.

In honor of his birthday and contributions to equal rights, check out 22 quotes about inspiration and life from the late politician.

1. “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.”

2. “It takes no political deal to give people freedom. It takes no survey to remove repression.”

3. “All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.”

4. “I know that you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living…”

5. “All men are created equal. No matter how hard they try, they can never erase those words. That is what America is about.

6. “If I’m fighting for the rights of gay people, which I am, then I’m fighting for the rights of all people.”

7. “Unless you have dialogue; unless you open the walls of dialogue, you can never reach to change people’s opinion.”

8. “The fact is that more people have been slaughtered in the name of religion than for any other single reason. That, that my friends, that is true perversion!”

10. “I don’t think we have a right to take people who’ve raised us, made us strong and healthy, and then toss them away like an empty can of beer.”

11. “Rights are won only by those who make their voices heard.”

12. “All over the country, they’re reading about me, and the story doesn’t center on me being gay. It’s just about a gay person who is doing his job.”

Ted Cruz under fire for using anti-gay slur as he continues attacks on US military advert – The Independent

Texas Senator Ted Cruz has come under fire for using an anti-gay slur as he continued his attacks on a US Army ad, claiming that the Democrats and the media are turning the military into “pansies”.

Angry veterans fired back at Mr Cruz after he retweeted a video juxtaposing a macho recruiting video for the Russian Army with a video of a daughter of two mothers becoming a US Army corporal.

Mr Cruz tweeted: “Holy crap. Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea….”

Despite the backlash to his initial post, Mr Cruz continued with his criticism of the US Army ad, tweeting: “I’m enjoying lefty blue checkmarks losing their minds over this tweet, dishonestly claiming that I’m ‘attacking the military.’ Uh, no. We have the greatest military on earth, but Dem politicians & woke media are trying to turn them into pansies. The new Dem videos are terrible.”

Executive Director of the Lincoln Project, Fred Wellman, responded to Mr Cruz, tweeting: “Bulls***. Veterans and service members are attacking you because you called our Army ‘woke’ about the story of a real soldier who is currently serving and compared it to a Russian video from 2014. You are such a hack. We see you and you’re a cowardly [piece of s***].”

“Pansy” is defined as a disparaging and offensive word for someone who’s homosexual. The term was first used in its current form in 1929, according to Merriam-Webster.

Cruz spokesperson Erin Perrine told The Independent: “Sen Cruz passionately supports the brave men and women of the United States military and has repeatedly expressed concerns that Democrat politicians, left-wing bureaucrats, and the media are politicizing our armed forces to promote a fringe woke agenda based on identity politics.

“Our military should be focused on winning wars, and we endanger our national security and our service members when they focus on anything else.”

The TikTok video retweeted by Mr Cruz shows a stony-faced, muscular man doing push-ups, lying in the snow with a rifle, and jumping out of a plane.

The Russian ad then gives way to the US’s colourful animation telling the true story of Cpl Emma Malonelord, who joined the Army after being raised by her two mothers.

The US Army said the ad shows “the deeply emotional and diverse” backgrounds of its members.

Several veterans slammed Mr Cruz for his comments.

Former director for European affairs for the national security council and a lieutenant colonel in the US Army, Alexander Vindman, tweeted: “Because you served in the military so you know, right? The US military is second to none. Please keep it out of your political theater. I hear there are actual problems Congress needs to address. BTW didn’t you swear to support and defend the US Constitution?”

A key witness in former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, Lt Col Vindman was reassigned from his position at the NSC and later resigned from the Army in July 2020 after a “campaign of bullying, intimidation, and retaliation,” a statement from his lawyer said.

Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, who lost both her legs while serving as a helicopter pilot in Iraq, also went after Mr Cruz, mockingly using his opening words: “Holy crap. Perhaps a US Senator shouldn’t suggest that the *Russian* military is better than the American military that protected him from an insurrection he helped foment?”

Veteran and director of communications for Catholics for Choice, Charlotte Clymer, wrote on the platform: “Am I surprised that Ted Cruz is mocking our military as ‘emasculated’? No. This is the coward who wouldn’t even stand beside his own wife when Trump publicly talked sh** about her.”

The hashtag #emasculaTED trended on Twitter in the hours following Mr Cruz’s post.

VoteVets, a liberal group who urges veterans to run for office, tweeted: “Ted Cruz attacks a US Army soldier for telling her story, says he prefers Russians. Because Ted Cruz is a sedition-loving traitor.”

The comments on the original US Army ad on YouTube got so vile that the comment section was disabled, The Army Times reported on Thursday.

Changes in US Army policy have enraged conservatives before, with Mr Cruz saying that allowing women to serve in combat roles was “nuts” as he was on the presidential campaign trail in early 2016.

A Space Force commander was fired last week after he claimed that the Pentagon’s agenda was “rooted in Marxism” because they were encouraging diversity and attempting to eliminate extremism within its ranks.

Alexander Reid Ross, a doctoral fellow for the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right based in the UK, told The Washington Post that before the video was retweeted by Mr Cruz he had seen versions of it “bouncing around some of the most violent and anti-American Telegram accounts that I monitor”.

John Noonan, military and defence advisor for Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, agreed with Mr Cruz, retweeting the video with the comment: “We are going to be the most tolerant military in history ever to lose a war,” to which Mr Cruz responded “yep”.

Mr Noonan later added: “I’m still not convinced the US Army ad here is real. It can’t be. I just can’t envision someone in the army hierarchy approving it.”

Mark Wahlberg Starrer ‘Joe Bell’ Moves To Roadside Attractions/Vertical Entertainment For July Release – Yahoo Entertainment

EXCLUSIVE: Joe Bell, the drama that stars Mark Wahlberg as a father who walks across America to honor his bullied gay son, is doing some more traveling. The film has been acquired for theatrical release by Roadside Attractions, with Vertical Entertainment aboard for a post-theatrical digital release. It opens July 23.

Joe Bell made its world premiere at virtual Toronto 2020, at which time it was acquired by Solstice Studios in a $20 million worldwide rights deal. I’d heard that Solstice might exit, and it has. That company, which released its first film in the Russell Crowe-directed Unhinged, is constructed to do theatrical releases of 2,000 screens and up. The pandemic, and the film’s subject matter, seem better served with a slower rollout, and Joe Bell now will begin on about 750 screens and build upward from there. The deal was negotiated by Roadside’s Howard Cohen, Vertical’s Peter Jarowey and Endeavor Content.

More from Deadline

The drama is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) from a script by the Brokeback Mountain duo of Diana Ossana and the late author/scribe Larry McMurtry. It veers from Wahlberg’s wheelhouse. He plays the rough-edged Oregon-based father who pays tribute to his gay teenage son Jadin by embarking on a walk across America to speak his heart to heartland adults and students about the potential terrifying high costs of bullying. The themes of tolerance and listening to your children are timely topics.

Newcomer Reid Miller (as Jadin), Connie Britton and Gary Sinise star alongside Wahlberg. The film is produced by Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Riva Marker, Eva Maria Daniels, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Ryan W. Ahrens, Ben Renzo, Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson.

“As parents and members of the LGBTQ+ community, we are thrilled that a star of Mark’s magnitude has chosen to share Joe Bell’s message of acceptance with filmgoers,” said Roadside co-presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen. That distributor is coming off the Renee Zellweger starrer Judy and The Peanut Butter Falcon.

“With movie theaters reopening, we are excited to partner with exhibitors to bring the extraordinary story of Joe Bell and his son Jadin to audiences around the country,” Wahlberg said.

Joe Bell has always been a labor of love and a story that we feel is necessary and resonant not only first and foremost for the LGBTQ+ community but universally for parents and caretakers at large,” said the film’s producers in a joint statement. “We can think of no better home than Roadside Attractions, shepherded by Eric and Howard’s skillful leadership, to bring Jadin and Joe Bell’s story to theaters.”

The pic will be released as Endeavor Content presents, in association with Argent Pictures and Rhea Films and Hercules Film Fund, A Stay Gold Features/Nine Stories/VisionChaos/Parliament of Owls Production, A Closest to the Hole/Leverage Entertainment Production.

LDP lawmaker says being LGBT goes against preservation of species – Japan Today

A lawmaker of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party said being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender goes against the preservation of the species at a party meeting on Thursday, participants said Friday, drawing rebuke within and outside of the ruling party.

Kazuo Yana, a three-term House of Representatives member, was also quoted by participants as saying at the gathering that LGBT people resist the basis of biology. The meeting was held to discuss a cross-party bill to promote understanding of sexual minorities.

Another LDP member, Mio Sugita, came under fire in 2018 for saying in a magazine article that the government should not support sexual-minority couples because they cannot bear offspring and thus are not “productive.”

Responding to Kyodo News in writing, Yana said, “I will refrain from commenting about the (LGBT) remark as it was a closed meeting,” but added, “It is necessary to promote understanding of sexual minorities.”

In the meeting, Yana repeatedly said he does not intend to discriminate against LGBT people, according to a participant.

His remark comes after Eriko Yamatani, another LDP member, said in a party meeting on Wednesday, “Some foolish things are going on” regarding sexual minorities, citing a case where a person born a male but identifies as a woman wanted to use a women’s restroom.

“Yana and Yamatani are both open to criticism for having a discriminatory attitude. The remarks were foolish,” said a senior LDP lawmaker.

LDP member and former economy minister Hiroshige Seko told a press conference Yana should thoroughly explain his remarks.

Main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan lawmakers Kanako Otsuji and Taiga Ishikawa, who are both openly gay, criticized Yana’s comments.

“I demand he retract the remarks,” Otsuji said. “How much does he have to hurt (LGBT) people and neglect their human rights to be satisfied?”

Ishikawa said Yana’s remarks represent an “extremely stereotypical view.”

Ryosuke Nanasaki, 33, head of a body supporting sexual minorities who has come out as gay, said he felt “a sense of void” after hearing of another discriminatory remark by a politician.

Nanasaki has protested every time such a remark was made but said, “Such remarks are made over and over. I feel hopeless thinking that this will continue.”

Japan Alliance for LGBT Legislation, comprised of groups aiding sexual minorities, said in a statement Yana’s remarks, which “hurt not only (LGBT) themselves but also their families, friends and acquaintances, cannot be overlooked.”

Pride House Tokyo Consortium, an entity promoting better understanding of sexual minorities in cooperation with sponsors of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, including Panasonic Corp., said it will soon deliver a letter of protest to the LDP over Yana’s remarks.

In the letter, the consortium will criticize Yana’s “intolerable” remarks as going against the Olympic Charter that bans discrimination of any kind, its officials said.
