WEST HOLLYWOOD – Each year the City of West Hollywood celebrates Pride with its One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival, which runs from Harvey Milk Day (May 22) through the end of June Pride month.

Additionally this year, West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey P. Horvath on Sunday officially declared May 23 as “Born This Way Day,” marking the tenth year of the release of Lady Gaga’s hit album.

To commemorate and recognize its cultural impact, the City of West Hollywood is celebrating with a street painting on Robertson Blvd in tribute to the LGBTQ+ community and as well as the album. Mayor Horvath also presented a Key to the City to Lady Gaga Sunday with a note of thanks: “Thank you for encouraging us to love ourselves and be proud!”

When it was originally released in 2011, Born This Way shattered records around the world. To date, the album has more than 5.8 billion global streams, 5.2 million physical albums sold, and 31 million digital tracks sold. Born This Way was Lady Gaga’s first #1 album and it debuted at #1 in 25 countries. It was named one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and is Certified 4X Platinum in the U.S.

Concurrent with the unveiling of the colorful street painting is the kickoff of Pride season in West Hollywood with the annual One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival. The 2021 theme for One City One Pride is For the Record – LGBTQ stories of the past that have often been hidden or undocumented. One must read between the lines to find stories hidden behind “beard” marriages, coded language, and erased or destroyed evidence. This year, One City One Pride looks at some of these previously hidden stories.

In order to prioritize health and well-being, One City One Pride 2021 is taking place virtually/in a socially distant manner for 2021.

A partial list of some of the upcoming events and programs for the 2021 One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival includes;

Sat, May 22, 20215:30 PM  Wed, Jun 30, 202110:30 PM, presented by Rogue Artists Ensemble.

Free. No RSVP Needed. Experience online or as a self-guided experience at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard West Hollywood, CA 90046

Rogue Artists Ensemble’s Love Note is a free, interactive, solo audio expedition of your heart, taking place in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park, where audience members can activate sonic narrative experiences at eight unique stops throughout the park. Using only your cell phone and headphones, you’ll discover and listen to stories about romance, compassion, and connection, leading to a secret phone line, where you are invited to share your own love story that will become part of the project’s archive.  The community-contributed stories recorded during the run will be then woven back into the experience to create an ever-evolving tapestry of voices calling out for love and belonging.

Love Note is a collaborative creation exploring the transcendence of love beyond identity, boundaries, and definitions. Significant contributions and performances are contributed by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Outdoor exhibition on traffic median at Santa Monica Blvd. and Doheny Drive

Meringue is a temporary public art exhibition by LGBTQ artist Kim Kiduck. Meringue’s sensual curves invite touch, and the artist intends it to feel like a portal to travel without moving—that you travel when you come in contact with it, not physically, but in the imagination. The translucency of Meringue lets sunlight in to glow naturally during the daytime, and at night transforms Meringue into a mixing chamber of various light combinations. The exhibition will be lit up in rainbow colors for the duration of the City’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival.

Presented by ONE Archives Foundation

Outdoor temporary art exhibition on the construction fence at 687 Robertson Boulevard and other sites in the Los Angeles region.

ONE Archives Foundation presents “Pride Publics: Words and Actions,” a multi-site outdoor exhibition that examines the intersection between pride and publicness and examines themes central to queer public life while highlighting trailblazers and their visions. With free and accessible outdoor installations plus a digital guide, this exhibition aims to give visibility to LGBTQ life in the public through the lens of history, community, and activism.

This exhibition is curated by Rubén Esparza, a multidisciplinary artist, activist, and independent curator based in Los Angeles. Installations will be on view for the months of June (West Hollywood) and October (Los Angeles County) in 2021.

“Pride Publics: Words and Actions” provokes questions central to queer public life: Who have been the LGBTQ movement leaders and trailblazers? What have they said? What have they done to advance the wellbeing of LGBTQ community? What key moments of change that have contributed to the public health, safety, education, rights, identity, and social belonging of queer life.

This exhibition is organized by ONE Archives Foundation. This program is supported by the City of West Hollywood’s Arts Division as part of the City’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival.

Peter Gay: Random thoughts on a hot spring day – The Sun Chronicle

It’s been awhile since I’ve had the opportunity to clear the cobwebs out of my head and share with you some of the thoughts that have taken place inside this gray-haired head of mine:

 No one hates wearing a mask more than I do and I’ll be the first to admit that I could have been better over the past year.

I always wear one whenever I’m around people I don’t know, however, especially when approaching others. It is why I had to bite my tongue to the point I thought it was going to bleed a couple of weeks ago.

It happened when I was picking someone up at the airport when a couple without masks walked toward me. The man saw my masked and shook his head.

What the moron and others like him failed to realize is why I was wearing the mask.

It had been almost a month since I received my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, so I was wearing the mask to protect him and his wife.

I’m also tired of hearing people say the requirement to wear masks violates their constitutional rights. I don’t hear the same people complaining when they’re forced to put on shoes during the summer when entering a store or restaurant, which is probably less of a health risk than not wearing masks.

 I’m not sure if it’s because I’m trying to be kinder to people because we’ve all been through a pandemic together or my recent experiences with traffic cameras in Providence, but I find myself being nicer to other motorists.

I often flash my high beams at someone to let them know I’m letting them onto the street I’m on. Very few have the courtesy to raise their hand in thanks.

 Imagine if Barack Obama had invited people to the nation’s capital for a “peaceful” protest and some members of the crowd, primarily black, smashed their way past security.

Imagine that some of those same members are identified as having ties with Antifa.

Imagine that some that are roaming the halls of the capitol are clearly heard on cell phone recordings hoping to find Mitch McConnell.

Imagine the “peaceful” protests Obama called for resulting in multiple deaths.

Do you think Republicans on Capitol Hill would downplay the violent attack?

Do you think Republicans would compare it to a “normal tour visit?”

Do you think they would support the formation of an independent commission similar to the Sept. 11 attacks?

I have to believe the answer to those questions is yes.

I also believe Democrats would downplay the scene I described and would reject forming a commission to investigate.

What has happened to this country?

Members of the Democratic and Republican parties willing to compromise for the good of the American public are now considered weak by their party’s base and those willing to admit the truth are removed from leadership positions.

When will those of you still listed with a “D” or an “R” next to your name in the voting books speak up and tell the leaders of your parties enough is enough?

 Speaking of Democrats, have you been following U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressly and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren? The Massachusetts’ liberals are pressing President Biden to cancel up to $50,000 of debt for federal student load borrowers.

I wonder if they’re willing to give a boost to students and their families who have fulfilled the commitments they made and paid off those loans.

 To steal a line from the 2004 Red Sox, “Why not us?”

I read in this newspaper that Foxboro selectmen approved a “pop-up” beer garden in their town. I would love to see something similar in Attleboro at Highland Park or some other venue. I have no doubt it would be successful.

While I’m on the subject of beer, I think the idea of a brewery at the site of the former Franco-American Club at the corner of Elm and East streets would be a big boost to the downtown, especially when 20- and 30-year old tenants move into 21 East Apartments.

 It’s amazing how many readers fall for the bait and respond to columnists who ignore facts so they can write something controversial.

I have to truly wonder if the writers of those columns actually believe what they’re putting in print or are simply trying to get people to respond and therefore make themselves seem more valuable? I believe it’s the latter.

 It’s less than 40 days until Truro. I can’t wait!

Playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s Former New York City Residence Receives Historic Distinction – NewsOne

NewsOne Featured Video

Renowned playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry’s contributions to the arts will forever be embedded in the fabric of history and an effort to preserve a significant element of her journey has moved forward. According to Broadway World, the visionary’s former New York City residence has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The home—where Hansberry dwelled between the years of 1953 and 1960—is located at 337 Bleecker Street; in the heart of the Greenwich Village neighborhood. The residence served as the backdrop for Hansberry’s evolution as a pivotal figure. Her time there was one of both professional and personal progression as she made triumphs in her career and explored and embraced her homosexuality. In the space, she penned A Raisin in the Sun which made it to the Ethel Barrymore Theater stage, making her the first African American woman playwright to have her work performed on Broadway. She used the proceeds she earned from the play to acquire the residential building in 1960.

Three years prior to her Broadway debut she and her husband separated. She later formed a long-time relationship with Dorothy Secules, one of the building’s residents. It was in her Bleecker Street apartment where she penned poignant pieces that explored racial justice, LGBT rights and women’s equality.

The NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project teamed up with the New York State Historic Preservation Office for the effort. “Honoring the very place where Lorraine Hansberry lived and worked through these State and National Register listings marks another important step in our mission to highlight the contributions of LGBT people to American history,” Amanda Davis, who serves as Project Manager for NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, said in a statement. “The site is also one of what we hope is a growing number of historic places nationwide that celebrates the achievements of Black women and lesbians of color. Hansberry’s active involvement in the civil rights movement and her influential writings on gender expectations and being a lesbian in 1950s America make her a thought-provoking figure for our time. The proximity of the Lorraine Hansberry Residence to Stonewall National Monument also provides an invaluable opportunity for tours and school groups to expand on their understanding of LGBT history beyond the 1969 Stonewall uprising.”

News about Hansberry’s residence being added to the National Register of Historic Places comes nearly two months after civil rights leader Malcolm X’s childhood home in Boston was placed on the list.

90 Day Fiancé’s Armando and Kenneth Wed in Romantic Mexican Ceremony: ‘Excited to Finally Be Here’ – Yahoo Entertainment

True Photography

90 Day Fiancé stars Armando Rubio and Kenneth Niedermeier have tied the knot!

The first male gay couple featured on the TLC franchise got married at the Mansarda winery in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, on Saturday, PEOPLE can exclusively announce.

“It’s been a long time coming and we’re very happy. We’re excited to finally be here,” Kenneth told PEOPLE about their big day.

“It was a battle in many ways, and so it’s surreal to finally be able to get married,” added Armando about their nuptials, which they were forced to delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We actually had a lot more time to think about it, and we planned an epic wedding and a lot of things worked out even to our advantage because we had to wait,” said Kenneth, 57, joking, “We haven’t killed each other. And after quarantine, that’s pretty good.”

“We noticed that being locked down together, it made us closer and we were able to get to know each other even more,” gushed Armando, 31.

The venue’s 100-guest limit made it difficult for them to invite everyone on their list, such as Armando’s large extended family, but fans of the hit reality series will be happy to know that both grooms’ children were in attendance.

For Kenneth, who moved to Mexico to start his life with Armando and his daughter Hannah, 8, having his own adult children present was the biggest treat.

“It means everything. I have really supportive children that have always had my back and never let me down,” he said. “Having them here to witness their dad getting married after all these years is amazingly special for me.”

“They love our relationship and that means the world to me,” he added, holding back tears.

For the newlyweds, it was important to include their children in the ceremony. Together, they lit a unity candle to symbolize their families blending together.

“We are very family-oriented and our kids are a very important part of our lives, so we included them throughout the whole wedding in many aspects,” Kenneth said of the music-filled event, which also featured dancers and a mariachi band.

The wedding venue was located in the middle of Mexico’s wine country, which is where the pair would meet up before Kenneth made the big move.

“Our theme was wine, wood, vineyards, and we like the outdoors a lot,” Armando said. “We like greenery, so we totally transformed the place to make it look like a garden.”

“We knew that was the place, and we chose the very first venue we went to,” added Kenneth. “It’s just surrounded by mountains and vineyards, and it is gorgeous. I actually never dreamed that I’d be getting married in a place like this and in a different country than I was born in. It’s really surreal for me!”

The theme carried over into the pair’s wedding bands, which are black with a wood interlay. The pieces were engraved with their initials and wedding date, but almost didn’t make it in time for the ceremony.

“I ordered some imitation rings in case they didn’t come, but they came, so we didn’t have to use the fake ones,” laughed Kenneth. “If anybody needs some rings, I have some fake ones. I need to put them on eBay.”

While they worked with a wedding planner, it was “perfectionist, over-thinker, detail-oriented” Armando who made many of the final decisions, including the menu.

“We did a Mexican-American blend,” he said of the meal, which featured sopes and corn soup to start, chicken and beef as entrees, and a four-tier cake as dessert. They also offered a dessert table and a burrito stand for guests who stayed late into the night.

The emotional couple, who first met through a gay fathers support group and immediately hit it off, wrote their own vows to share their roller coaster ride of a love story.

The two became fan favorites during last year’s season of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, during which they navigated Armando coming out as gay to his mom and the struggles of his family accepting his relationship, so the reality star was excited for them to see their touching union. (Season 3 of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way returns later this year.)

“None of my family members have ever been to a gay wedding, so it’s a first for every single one of them,” he said about their attendance. “I’m hoping to open up their minds and what they feel in a positive way.”

“Hopefully seeing the love between us will really open their minds and hearts all the way, and they can see that love is just love,” added Kenneth.

Armando and Kenneth are holding off on a big honeymoon, instead taking a trip to Mexico City next month, but their dream destination when they can finally make it happen: Switzerland.

While the two already have five children between them, they played coy about adding more, saying, “You’ll have to wait and see what’s happening.”

In the meantime, they’re just excited for their future as husbands after their lengthy battle to procure a marriage license.

“I just found the perfect person for me, so I am very happy looking into the future,” Kenneth said. “I see such a bright future for me with Armando, with Hannah, with my kids.”

“This is what we’ve been fighting for, so the fact that it finally happened is a huge triumph,” added Armando.

Scenes of joy at the Mx. Battle Creek Pride pageant – Battle Creek Enquirer

Packing up his things backstage at the Music Factory in Battle Creek, Dakota Bovee removed the glimmering crown from his head and gave it a subtle kiss.

Bovee, a drag queen who performs under the name Dahlia Rivers, had just won the 2021 Mx. Battle Creek Pride Pageant.

“This week has been like, so little time to prepare, between my day job and just trying to make stuff happen,” Bovee said. “It’s unbelievable. That’s the word I’ll use.”

Bovee discovered his love for drag as a child when his mother, Sheila Martin, took him to Goodwill for a Halloween costume and they picked out a poodle skirt for him to wear. Today, Bovee designs and sews his own drag outfits.

“No one else is my size, my mother couldn’t sew worth a darn, and so I learned how to sew at a young age just to fix jeans,” Bovee said. “But then I got into drag and when I couldn’t buy costumes in my size. I had to buckle down and try making them myself.”

Drag Queen Dahlia Rivers (Dakota Bovee) kisses the Mx. Battle Creek Pride crown on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Music Factory in Battle Creek, Mich.

Six contestants competed for the crown Saturday night, judged on their presentation, talent and a question and answer portion of the show. Bovee’s question from the judges: What does Pride mean to you?

“It’s not just a month for us to flaunt to the world, it’s a reminder of where we’ve been, and where we still have to go,” Bovee said. “Across the globe, there are still places where you can be killed for being gay… But remember how far we’ve gotten and celebrate.”

While June is recognized nationally as Pride Month, Battle Creek traditionally holds its celebrations in July so the events don’t overlap with those in other cities. This year, a combination of in-person and virtual events will take place Monday, July 19 through Sunday, July 25.

“This year we tried our best to do our usual Pride Week with a downtown parade and a public festival,” Battle Creek Pride Co-President Deana Spencer said in a press release. “But with all the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, it was just impossible. So we’re moving to Plan B. And it’s going to be great.”

Below is a list of Pride events the Battle Creek area can look forward to. For more information, visit their website at battlecreekpride.org.

“Pride Week is our most important week of the year,” Spencer said. “We hope everyone in our LGBTQ+ community and in the Battle Creek area will help us celebrate and join in the fun.”

Christian Realtor Dropping License Over Personal Beliefs on LGBT Issues – CBN News

Minnesota-based realtor Matt Moore, who is a Christian, said Friday he is allowing his real estate license to expire due to his beliefs on LGBT issues.

“My current broker will not allow me to continue working under her … if I continue to speak publicly about LGBTQ+ issues,” he told Faithwire.

Moore first announced the development Friday morning, asking his Twitter followers to pray for him and his wife, Tabitha Piper Moore.

He went on to write he and Tabitha have decided to “move on” from real estate and reiterated they “aren’t angry” about this development.

“I’m not looking to bear the Christian political torch,” Moore added later. “I have important things — Gospel things — to focus on. I think I’ve served my role in this by pleading [and] sharing. Perhaps God has called one of you to take up the political torch. But I think he’s called me to move on.”

As it stands right now, his real estate license will sunset on July 1.

Moore, who has been open about his own struggle with same-sex attraction and indicated he does not speak to his personally held beliefs while working with clients, first addressed this issue in early December 2020, when he published an open letter to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which had recently updated the language in its code of ethics in a way he argued could spark “discrimination against Christian realtors.”

In November, the board of directors for the NAR adopted new wording for Standard of Practice 10-5 as part of Article 10 of the organization’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

The updated code states realtors “must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”

It also revised Policy Statement 29 to state realtors “shall be subject to disciplinary action under the Code of Ethics with respect to all of their activities” (emphasis added).

Previously, the code qualified that realtors would be “subject to disciplinary action under the Code of Ethics only with respect to real estate-related activities and transactions involving the realtor” (emphasis added).

NAR President Vince Malta said at the time the changes were made as part of the association’s efforts toward “combatting and overcoming bigotry and injustice,” a cause Moore championed.

However, the Christian realtor explained, he’s concerned the updated language in the NAR’s code of ethics will do more harm than good.

“As public awareness of the fact that realtors can be reported for things said and done outside of real estate increases,” Moore wrote, “realtors who express a historic Christian view on homosexual and transsexual behavior could become regular targets for undeserved allegations of hate speech.”

Moore’s concern, he noted, is founded in the fact there is no clearly understood definition for so-called “hate speech” in the U.S. and, as such, “it is common for a mere articulation of Christian beliefs concerning homosexuality and transgenderism to be labeled as hate speech.”

“When we say that God desires LGBTQ+ people to turn to Jesus in faith and away from sexual (and all!) sin, we are often accused of doing harm to LGBTQ+ persons,” Moore wrote. “But this is not harmful. This is not hate speech. This is an opinion.”

“And there are countless opinions in this country about various moral issues,” he continued. “A healthy society is one in which many opinions about many things can be tolerated. An unhealthy society is one in which people seek to ‘cancel’ or silence those who hold different opinions. I’m afraid NAR’s new rules, if interpreted and enforced in the way I worry they might be, could play a part in moving our society further away from health rather than toward it.”

Moore also raised the fact that the hearing panel — made up not of lawyers or psychologists, but other realtors — is charged with determining the motivations of the individual accused of uttering “hate speech.” He argued it is “very difficult to prove intent,” whether good or bad.

“Under NAR’s new rules,” Moore asked, “will it really be possible for a Christian realtor — or any realtor whose religious beliefs consider homosexual and transsexual behavior to be unnatural — to speak publicly of their views without subjecting themselves to undeserved allegations of hate speech and potentially career-ending discipline?”

He wrote in December he was concerned the NAR’s change in policy could mean he “may one day no longer be able to work as a real estate agent.”

Moore explained to Faithwire there are Christian-owned brokerages in the Twin Cities area, but some of them would be “uneasy about agents speaking publicly about biblical views on sexuality and gender, which is something I do regularly because it’s part of my history and ministry.”

“If a broker did decide to carry my license, they would also be hit by any future arrows that are shot my way,” he said. “They would be putting their own businesses, NAR membership (which is more vital than you might think), and potentially even their licenses at risk.”

Lil Nas X rips crotch of leather trousers on live television – Yahoo Eurosport UK

Lil Nas X has poked fun at himself after his trousers split open on live television during an energetic pole dancing routine.

The music star was performing his hit Montero (Call Me By Your Name) on the series finale of US sketch show Saturday Night Live when he suffered a wardrobe malfunction.

He was dressed in tight leather trousers with flames over the crotch when he gyrated on the pole and looked alarmed when he realised the fabric had split.

He covered up the accident by concealing his crotch with his hand for the rest of the number.

After the show he wrote on Twitter: “NOT MY PANTS RIPPED ON LIVE ON TV.

“OMFG NO.”

He added: “I wanted to do my pole routine so bad this what i get lmaoo.”

“I know I do a lot of planned shit but ripping my pants on live television is not one of them.”

Lil Nas X, 22, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, continued: “At first I was afraid to even perform.

“Then we rehearsed for 2 weeks, then all of the dancers got removed because one had Covid and new ones had to learn the routine in 24 hours, and then I ended up ripping my pants and couldn’t finish.

“Everything happens for a reason tho lol.”

He also shared a video on TikTok of himself watching the moment back on television, wincing and laughing at the moment the fabric split.

Lil Nas X released the track in March alongside a provocative music video which featured the musician sliding down a pole into hell before giving the devil a lap dance.

The singer, who is gay, became a target of conservative criticism due to the video.

After the song’s release, he said he hoped it would further normalise being gay and help bring more LGBT narratives into mainstream pop music.

He is best known for the megahit Old Town Road, which topped the Billboard chart for a record 19 weeks in 2019.

10 Things with Kicker Matt Gay – therams.com

1: “Kicker’s jacked, man.”

Sarina: You joined the Rams halfway through the season and I remember after your first game against the Buccaneers, Sean McVay ended his presser by saying you look like you train with Aaron Donald. “Kicker’s jacked, man.” How do you see yourself in comparison to other kickers? And have you ever trained with Aaron Donald?

Matt: I definitely feel like I am bigger than the typical kicker, but that typical kicker has changed a lot in recent years I feel like. And no, I never have trained with AD, but I’m hoping to soon!

2: Game of inches

Sarina: What is a misconception about kickers that can help fans understand the art of kicking better?

Matt: That it’s easy! (laughs). So much of kicking is just confidence! And it really is an art, something that has to be continually perfected. It’s a game of inches. If you’re an inch off in the beginning, you could be feet or yards off in the end.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: A full guide to f**king aliens and being gay – PinkNews

Shepherd and Kaidan in Mass Effect 3. (Bioware)

Ah, relationships and romance. The cornerstone of any Bioware game, especially when it comes to Mass Effect, which is why you need a handy guide.

With the release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, fans and newcomers alike can experience the thrill of saving the universe as their own personal take on Commander Shepard.

That includes choosing which crewmates to romance – a special moment that only adds to the space soap opera tension between the trilogy’s iconic characters.

Relationships have also been a point of contention for the series in the past, and that sadly doesn’t change here.

While you’ve got the opportunity to bang aliens from the first game onwards (thanks, Bioware!) LGBT+ romances are off the table until the third game.

What’s most disappointing is that same-sex voice lines were recorded for the first game but not used. Further, Mass Effect 2 was set to have Jack as pansexual and Jacob as gay but these were removed for fear of upsetting conservatives who wrongly criticised the first game for including alien nudity.

Despite a fan petition to have these romance options reinstated, Bioware has stayed true to the original releases and kept the options the same.

So, after all that, who can Shepard romance across the Mass Effect trilogy? Without further ado, here’s our guide to shagging aliens and being gay.

Mass Effect

The first game in the trilogy is the most limited when it comes to romances. There are only two options for both male and female Shepard, one of which is shared.

Male Shepard – Ashley Williams

Female Shepard – Kaidan Alenko

Both – Liara T’soni

What’s also awkward about this first game is how easy it is to slip into an unwanted relationship. There are no clear cut dialogue options to choose a specific companion. Simply being positive to one of these characters is enough to trigger the start of a relationship.

Liara in particular seems very keen, which is flattering and all… but be careful if you’re aiming towards a specific option.

Of course, being an Asari, Liara is technically agender despite being female presenting. It’s clear she’s intended to be the “sexy blue alien” – not least with the Legendary Edition increasing her breast size – but if you’re looking for a human LGBT+ relationship you’re out of luck.

Mass Effect
Mass Effect. (Bioware)

Mass Effect 2

Here the series begins to open up with more options for both male and female Shepard, even if there are still, disappointingly, no same-sex options.

Thankfully there’s a little more to these relationships than before. First you’ll need to complete the loyalty mission for the crewmate you’re looking to woo. Then there are specific dialogue options to choose (they’re fairly obviously flirtatious) that will eventually lock you into that relationship as you share an intimate moment before the final suicide mission.

Those options are:

Male Shepard – Tali’Zorah vas Neema, Miranda Lawson, Jack

Female Shepard – Garrus Vakarian, Jacob Taylor, Thane Krios

The game also introduces flings for both genders, where you can romance a character but they’re not permanent. They also won’t count towards the paramour achievement.

These do include a same-sex option for female Shepard in Kelly Chambers, as well as three Asari options (with Liara returning). But these flings aren’t as fleshed out as the “real” romances. And if you’re a gay male Shepard? You’re out of luck.

Flings – Samara, Morinth, Kelly Chambers, Liara T’Soni

Choosing a fling with Morinth also results in instant death so… probably not your best choice.

Mass Effect
Mass Effect. (Bioware)

Mass Effect 3

Now we’re talking. It took three games over five years but Mass Effect 3 finally brought players the same-sex romance options they were gagging for.

Steve Cortez is a pilot who joins your ship in this game only, so is somewhat underwritten compared with other options.

For female Shepards, Kelly Chambers is your option for lesbian romance, unless you’re happy with a quick fling.

More interesting is Kaidan Alenko: he’s only available for female Shepard in the first game but if he survives the events of that game, he’ll reappear here for either gender to romance. Yep, Kaidan is finally bisexual.

Survival is a big part of the romances in this third game. All of the options, besides the newly introduced Cortez, are returning characters that can only be romanced based on relationships and/or survival in the previous two games. Expect plenty of drama and conflict then.

As with the second game, your dialogue choices will impact your relationship status and eventually lock you in. There remain flings too, if you’re so inclined.

Male Shepard – Steve Cortez, Ashley Williams (if she survives ME1), Tali’Zorah vas Normandy (if romanced in ME2), Jack (if romanced in ME2), Miranda Lawson (if romanced in ME2),

Female Shepard – Garrus Vakarian (if romanced in ME2), Thane Krios (if romanced in ME2), Samantha Traynor (fling)

Both – Liara T’Soni, Kaidan Alenko, Kelly Chambers (if romanced in ME2), Diana Allers (fling)

The Citadel DLC, included in the Legendary Edition, also unlocks three further flings:

Javik (for female Shepard)

James Vega (for female Shepard)

Samara (for both Shepards)

So while Mass Effect 3 does give the option of same-sex romances, they are sadly limited.

Let’s hope any future games in the series are more open-ended and diverse when it comes to romance options.

CNN cuts ties with Rick Santorum after disparaging comments about Native American culture – USA TODAY

Former Republican senator Rick Santorum is out as a political commentator at CNN after a controversy surrounding his comments about Native American culture

On CNN, Santorum was a senior political commentator who was often tasked with giving the Republican point of view during campaign coverage. Alison Rudnick, vice president of HLN Communications and CNN Diversity and Inclusion, confirmed to USA TODAY on Sunday that the network had “parted ways” with Santorum.

“When I signed on with CNN, I understood I would be providing commentary that is not regularly heard by the typical CNN viewer,” Santorum tweeted Saturday. “I appreciate the opportunity CNN provided me over the past 4 years. I am committed to continuing the fight for our conservative principles and values.”

Former senator Rick Santorum is out at CNN as a result of his comments on Native American culture.

The former senator drew backlash last month for a April 23 speech about “birthing a nation from nothing” at the Standing Up For Faith & Freedom conference for Young America’s Foundation, a conservative youth organization. A video clip from his address went viral, in which he said mostly European settlers created a nation based on Judeo-Christian principles and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“We came here and created a blank slate. We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes, we have Native Americans, but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture,” the former Pennsylvania senator said.

“It was born of the people who came here pursuing religious liberty, to practice their faith, live as they ought to live, and have the freedom to do so.”

Rick Santorum says he ‘misspoke’:The CNN commentator sparked backlash for saying ‘there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture’

In a statement to USA TODAY, Santorum previously said he “had no intention of minimizing or in any way devaluing Native American culture.”

On May 3, he told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that he “misspoke” in the sense that it wasn’t clear that he was speaking in the context of the founding of the U.S. government.

“People say I’m trying to dismiss what happened to the Native Americans,” he said. “Far from it. The way we treated Native Americans was horrific. It goes against every bone and everything I’ve ever fought for as a leader in the Congress.”

The president of the National Congress of American Indians, Fawn Sharp, called Santorum arrogant for the response.

“I was optimistic he would own it, he would recognize it and he would apologize, but he did none of those things,” Sharp said.

Rick Santorum to Parkland students:Learn CPR instead of protesting for ‘phony gun laws’

Santorum’s comments have garnered blowback before, especially his views on gay marriage and homosexuality. In 2003, he infuriated gay rights advocates by appearing to compare homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality.

He also made controversial comments to students in 2018 about their efforts to change gun laws after a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

“How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that,” Santorum said as a guest on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Did he just come out? ‘Gay Thanos’ is taking Twitter by storm – Queerty

Bizarre news out of Twitter (what other kind is there?): Marvel fans have begun to speculate that the villain Thanos has been a closeted gay this entire time.

For the uninitiated: Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) is a master villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the chief baddie of the blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. After assembling a magical gauntlet, Thanos obliterates half the population of the universe with a snap of his fingers.

The phrase “Gay Thanos” began trending on the social media platform following a viral tweet that noted the colored gems which power Thanos’ magical infinity gauntlet actually form the colors of the pride flag.

Related: Marvel Studios president confirms a gay superhero is coming soon to a theater near you

Gay Thanos is trending,” tweeted Comics Girl Ashley. “The man literally searched the entire universe to assemble a bejeweled pride gauntlet.”

The trend has continued to gather steam, as users note some of Thanos’ more homoerotic qualities.

“Why is gay thanos trending? You’re welcome,” wrote @Jamesrfrew.

Gay thanos trending? Explains why he was a lil too experienced in choking someone in this scene,” tweeted @nikiwidow.

Gay Thanos is trending so i’m doing my job with the only gay thanos meme i have,” said @MakaBun_.

Gay Thanos??? Congrats on coming out love,” posted @antmustdie. The post also made note of the pride flag/infinity gem correlation.

We’re not sure how we feel about the excitement surrounding a potentially gay genocidal maniac. That said, Thanos somehow manages to be the most sympathetic character in Infinity War. Maybe he was just snuffing homophobia out of existence?

This isn’t the first time a fictional villain has been “outed” on social media either. Back in 2017, the titular monster from the horror movie The Babadook became the subject of a similar trending campaign, which has forever made the character something of an ironic queer icon. Ditto the evil clown Pennywise, from the cinematic adaptations of IT. If those incidents sets any precedent, we expect to see plenty of Thanos cosplay at this year’s pride festivals.

At 95, my wife and I recently had our first vaccination at our local GP’s. It was a memorable experience: well organised, compassionate, efficient attention, painless jab, no after-effects whatsoever and peace of mind. Highly recommended, if only for selfish reasons. – Jim Ayling, Kirrawee

Dutton’s war on wokeism weaponises intolerance

Defence Minister Peter Dutton uses “woke” as a pejorative term: it is not (“Going for woke: Dutton aims at tea and sympathies”, May 22). If members of the Australian Defence Force, and the public servants that support them, were fully cognisant of the various issues that concern social justice and racism in our world, they would be less likely to trample on them when undertaking their duties here and abroad. Shame on Dutton. – Mick Grimson, Leumeah

A morning tea to celebrate diversity in the ADF wouldn’t mean anything to Dutton but it would mean the world to any serving gay personnel seeing their sexuality being recognised and celebrated. What sort of signal does this send to any gay person thinking of a career in the military? – Bruce Ingrey, Elizabeth Bay

It is an apt coincidence that Dutton’s ruling against the “woke agenda” within our ADF chimes with the centenary of British code-breaker Alan Turing’s birth. Turing is widely credited with making the single most important contribution to the winning of World War II. Post-war, he was found guilty of (what were at the time) homosexual offences and was chemically castrated by government authority. Turing subsequently took his own life. In this day and age, you would have to think that Dutton’s ministerial priorities need serious adjustment. – Peter Thomas, Rose Bay

“Woke” is a term used by those who do not have empathy, a concern for their fellow human beings or an interest in the common good to describe those who do. – Keith Binns, Goulburn

For so long, conservative politicians have condemned the so-called “cancel culture” in society, which they say is an aggressive manifestation of political correctness. Now Dutton has cancelled the morning teas at his department. Being such an interventionist in civilian activities shows that Dutton doesn’t have enough serious work to do. – Kim Woo, Mascot

The role of the ADF is to fight martial wars overseas, not culture wars within Australia. Dutton seems to think that “woke” is some form of stinging insult. Being woke, defined as alert to injustice and social issues in society – especially racism – is a fine thing. – Rob Clifton-Steele, Chatswood

The Liberal Party portrays itself as the party that defends “freedom” and “freedom of speech”. But Dutton wants to tell people what they can and can’t wear and words they can and can’t use. He has gone so far to issue it as an order. The party of “freedom” reveals itself as the party that just loves control. It’s almost Orwellian. – Brendan Jones, Annandale

“Woke” culture cancelled at Defence, and plus Dutton has cut public servants in his office to an absolute minimum. He has my vote. – Helen Flanagan, Mudgee

Banks offer mining industry no coal comfort

Let me get this straight: mining companies can’t get finance for projects “due to banks and regulators’ approach to climate change” (“Banks ‘acting like zealots’ against fossil fuel industry,” May 22). So, instead of seeing the writing on the wall and acting sensibly for their shareholders, the arrogant and entitled mining executives – their heads in the sand along with George Christensen (who else?) at the helm of a ridiculous inquiry – resort to name-calling and bullying to get their way, citing anti-fossil fuel sentiment as “groupthink supposition”. Sounds about right. – Kerrie Wehbe, Blacktown

I’m not a big fan of our banking system, but I’m beginning to come around. – Margaret Grove, Abbotsford

Climate change

The NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell should realise that schools don’t have a monopoly on learning. (“An inconvenient truant: climate strikes are back”, May 22-23). The young Australians who chose to miss a day of school to strike for climate action have demonstrated an ability to critically investigate misinformation on climate change (much of which comes from politicians and parties with vested interests), to stand up and take action based on integrity and principles for the good of our world. As a climate activist in his 70s, it gives me hope to see young people taking positive action against climate change. – Keith Woodward, Avalon Beach

It is hardly surprising that these courageous young people are taking their future into their own hands, when the adults responsible for them have done such a poor job of looking after their world. – Anne O’Hara, Wanniassa, ACT

Nats unbelievable

How can this be (“The Nats are back”, smh.com.au, May 23)? After all the pork barrelling, sports rorts, dodgy land deals, sex scandals and the worst environmental record in Australia, they still win the seat of Upper Hunter. Clearly nobody cares about any of the above. Self-interest wins again. It’s enough to make you weep. – Judy Hungerford, North Curl Curl

Mark of characters

Unless you are like James Ruse High and get to pick and choose the absolute cream of the state’s young minds, school HSC results are highly dependent on the particular cohort of that year (“School board schism over fraud, debt, falling results”, May 22-23). Often parents who send their children to over-the-top expensive private schools fail to realise that it’s not a guarantee of a high HSC result. It’s more to do with the networking which may benefit their child later in life. – Peter Miniutti, Ashbury

Building false hope

Lorraine Phillips (Letters, May 22-23) doesn’t get it quite right when she talks about unrealised revitalisation plans for Parramatta Road and Oxford Street every five years. She forgot William Street, the fabled “neo-Parisian boulevard”. – Tony Mitchell, Hillsdale

Your correspondent left out the plan to build the new fish markets. Each time I visit, I look for the first exciting sign of shovels. – Laurie Le Claire, Epping

Elizabeth Farrelly has nailed it (“A demolished bridge too far: the unholy rush to replace charm with concrete”, May 23-24). “Philistines” comes to mind when thinking of those responsible for the proposal to demolish Cuttagee and other valued wooden bridges. – Karen Joynes, Bermagui

We live in strange times – from Elizabeth Farrelly’s article about bridges – where the Bega Valley Council want to “capture heritage ” by building a new bridge – to the bizarre concept of turning Oxford Street into a “cultural and creative precinct” by increasing building height (“Taller buildings, cultural spaces to bring ‘new life’ to Oxford Street”, May 22-23). Just go to Milsons Point to see how that works. Across the railway track, Kirribilli shows that low rise is much more successful. I despair at all the stupidity and greed. – Anita Brown, Granville

Gillard is golden

Bevan Shields suggests Julia Gillard had a choice when she lost office in 2013 to either dwell in the past or to contribute to the future (“Gillard garners Brit popularity for $6.5b education fund”, May 22-23). Thankfully, she chose the latter course, unlike some of her contemporaries. Through her actions, she has made an international contribution creating better educational opportunities for girls around the world. Suffragettes mobilised under the motto “deeds not words”. I can’t think of a better exemplar of these values than Australia’s first female prime minister. – Gordon Lambert, Kiama Downs

Eight years ago, Julia Gillard had a choice. It was not to snipe and provide commentary on political events in Australia but to use her considerable talent and work to influence matters on the international stage where she is highly respected. How good would it have been to have had Julia Gillard and Jacinta Ardern working in concert in our corner of the Pacific to shore up the big health, education and environmental issues facing both countries? Opportunity lost Australia. – Lyn Savage, Coogee

Traffic takes its tolls

Ask anyone who knows about transport and they will tell you that the NSW government’s plans won’t, in the long term, ease traffic in many parts of the city – like Military Road for instance – as they do nothing for public transport (“Saturday noon high time for traffic jams”, May 22-23). Transport Minister Andrew Constance, however, appears to realise that by making cuts to and privatising the bus network you can make driving more attractive, increase traffic volumes and hoodwink the public into supporting $20 billion to $30 billion in new ineffective toll tunnels that will then need to be paid off by many generations of NSW residents through their taxes or eToll accounts. – Ken Wilson, Willoughby

One of the greats

I am 60 years of age and my childhood just ended (“Manly legend and NRL Immortal Bob Fulton dies aged 73”, smh.com.au, May 23). As a child if I heard that my hero was out of the game I didn’t want to go. The greatest player I have ever seen. – Simon Squires, Hornsby

Work-off art

Saturday’s Spectrum tells me the Archibald Prize is “Sydney’s answer to the Melbourne Cup” (“The crowd-pleaser”, May 22-23). If that’s true, can I look forward to a public holiday this year? One hundred years is a long time to wait for it. – Meg Smith, Umina Beach

Jibber Jabber

Had my first AstraZeneca jab last week. No side effects other than an increased level of smugness. – David Farrell, Erskineville

No Clare Perry (Letters, May 22-23), I would reckon ‘jabs’ are here to stay – or at least until election time. I’d surmise Scotty from Marketing is building a formidable array of ‘jab’ enticements for the entire nation – “jab creation”, “jab training”, “rural jab opportunities”, and of course “jab equality for women”. The latter understandably to be offset against the current perception of unfair “jabs for the boys”. – Peter Bower, Naremburn

Playing golf the day after getting the jab there was a discussion about the after-effects, namely feeling tired with slightly achy bones. As I feel like that all the time I soldiered on with the game with a slight improvement in my score. A win-win situation either way. – Vicky Marquis, Glebe

Dozens arrested in Thailand in raid on gay ‘chemsex’ party – The Tribune India

Bangkok, May 23

Thai police said on Sunday that they had arrested 62 men for breaching coronavirus restrictions in a raid on a gay “chemsex” party, the country’s largest such crackdown during the pandemic.

The men were arrested on Saturday night at Faros Sauna 2, where police also found drugs, needles and used condoms, said Police Colonel Ekapop Tanprayoon, superintendent of Bangkok’s Wang Thong Lang District police station.

“(In the past) we have reprimanded people for gathering to drink at home,” Ekapop told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“But under the current circumstances there shouldn’t be so many people in such a crowded area,” he said, adding that Faros Sauna 2 has two buildings – one with 50 bedrooms – and a swimming pool and karaoke.

As Thailand grapples with a third Covid-19 wave, campaigners are warning of the health risks posed by an apparent increase in chemsex – where mainly gay and bisexual men meet to take drugs such as crystal meth and unprotected sex is common.

A largely conservative Buddhist society, Thailand has a reputation for its relaxed attitude towards gender and sexual diversity since homosexuality was decriminalised in 1956.

Yet Thai LGBT+ people often face discrimination and stigma in schools, the workplace and in healthcare facilities, and are often rejected by their families.

People who attended the party and its organisers face charges of violating an emergency decree put in place last March to combat Covid-19, Ekapop said, and could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 40,000 baht  ($1,276).

Some 30 people have also tested positive for drugs so far and will be charged with drug-related crimes, he said.

Chemsex users are at risk of drug addiction or overdoses, as well as mental health problems, according to campaigners.

Nikorn Chimkong, president of the Bangkok Rainbow Organization, an LGBT+ advocacy group, said he was concerned the arrests would contribute to the image of gay men being “promiscuous” and “spreading diseases”.

“Chemsex parties are a new normal amid the pandemic, and what is worrying is the health of those attending, such as the risks of contracting Covid-19 and HIV,” he said. — Reuters
