Gender: Standards promote health for all youth

Re: “New health standards are alarming,” (TNT letter, 7/31).

After reading this letter to the editor, I was saddened by the inaccuracies, but I was deeply disturbed by the effect that letter being shared would have for our students.

The new state health standards aim to keep all youth safe enough to get the same quality education regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation or any category of difference. Isn’t that what we all want for our communities?

As an educator, I know thought and time were invested in these standards. People should understand that teaching about a topic is not the same as promoting a topic. I can teach about World War II, but I am not promoting World War III.
